What is the typically cost of say a 1970 Schwinn Orange Krate in good to excellent condition? How difficult is it to find parts for wear items, such as the front drum brakes? If any one has one for sale, please contact me.

A five speed, stick shifter Orange Krate in good to excellent condition would go for around $1100 - $1200. Parts are not too hard to find, Schwinn still makes some replacement parts.

Message:
A year ago, I was given a 1960s Western Flyer (London Flyer to be exact). It is a three speed, and I have the original tires (Dunlop double-stripe whitewalls), original wheels (Dunlop rims with Sturmey-Archer hub on back wheel, the front has six broken spokes, the hub has a cracked coaster brake ring), but I have the replacement parts installed (including the seat). I have seen only one of this particular model in the Southeast Kansas area. The paint is somewhat glossy, after having waxed it several times, the chrome is in beautiful condition, and it is in working order (due to the replaced parts), and it comes with the carying rack on the back. Including the orig. parts with everything else, What would it be worth?

As for the Drake, try asking under the English Roadster topic. The dudes there will know that brand. As for the Iver Johnson... I saw your message under the "Hi-wheeler/etc" topic, and in that message you also mentioned that you are just getting into collecting bicycles. Well based on that, I'd say wait on the I-J. Not that the price isn't good. It is a decent price. But if you are just getting into collecting, why not start off with a smaller junk. Another problem with starting with the $400 I-J is that you might not want to do much to the bike once it is in your posession, 'cause you might end up messing something up! No reflection on you personally, but if you're new at the hobby, you probabaly should start with a smaller investment and get a bike that you can improve without possibly hurting it's value. That just my 2 cents!

Good advice! I didn't realize--considering the prices I've seen quoted in these discussions--that 400 bucks was that high. Of course it's a good week-and-a-half's wages for me, so you're right, I should probably look into something cheaper. The Drake is sort of a move in that direction and that one was free! I'm still researching that one. One other question regarding restorations. With many antiques it seems as though the less you touch it the more valuable it is. On the other hand, if you actually want to use the item (like a bicycle) you really have to fix broken parts, treat rust, etc. Where do collectors of bicycles generally fall on this matter? Thanks, Andrew.

You'll find that kind of question asked in a lot of places on this web site. It really is just up to you. I have a couple 'riders' that turn heads on the street, but are already pretty scratched up so I don't mind getting them dirty, wet and scratched up some more. But if you have an exceptionally clean original bicycle, I'd say you are better off NOT riding it around, unless it is a dry day. If a bike has been stored properly in someone's attic for many years, and is a nice clean original, I'd think it would be worth your while to keep it that way. So... the solution? Obviously: have some bikes that are 'show bikes' and some that are riders!

Thanks to Kath for answering my question on value of my Schwinn 56 Corvette. Im going to strip all the original blue paint and replace it shiny black with white accents. Im going to take it to a professional sign letterer and have them reproduce the corvette design on the seat post and lettering on the chainguard. Im keeping all the original chrome rims, handlebars, light, rack and fenders. Im replacing the ww tires with new ww tires and the seat with a new black gel seat, the original blue grips im replacing with black ones. The chain, hubs and pedals are all good and still shiny. Im hoping this bike will be a real beauty when im through and I intend to ride it everywhere. Am I crazy for messing with an original, I dont intend to sell it, its my bike and I want to ride it. Should I hold onto the original parts that I replace or sell them to someone trying to restore another bike? Whats everyone think of this? Am I making a big mistake?

Krate values are all over the place. I would guess your bike would be in the $650 - $800 range (but this is an unfounded estimate without more detail). Rust bucket Krates are selling in the $300 - $400 range and a '71 Grey Ghost Krate just brought $3100 on the eBay auction. The Cotton Picker is a two year only bike (I think -- the Grey Ghost was 1 year) so that adds to it's desireablity. Check the Schwinn Forums http://www.schwinn.com/Forums/Collectornet.html and subscribe or get a sample issue of Sting-Ray City News (P.O. Box 13343, Scottsdale, AZ 85267-3343). Take your time and do a little research. I sold a '65 Deluxe Sting-Ray too cheap when I was getting started with the hobby (it sold it about a minute after I posted it). The eBay Internet Auction seems to be a good place to get your best price. Search on completed auctions under "Schwinn" to get an idea of the prices http://pages.ebay.com/aw/search.html Best of Luck! You have a very nice bike and should get a good price for it. Bob Hufford bhufford@mail.orion.org

That bike should not have a black and white seat. But the red frame with the orange (not yellow??) fork could be right. Are you sure it is a '75? It sounds like a '77 and up, in which case even the black and white seat could be right (is it a Sting-Ray II)? Its probably worth around $200 if in good condition.

It sounds like you are measuring the frame (16") as modern bikes are sized (along the seat tube). Generally older bicycles are measured according to tire size (20", 24", 26"). That serial number decodes to 1961. And as you are finding out, Schwinn chrome cleans up well. Does the bike have a tank, rack or lights?

In response to the John Deere bikes, there were single speed ones made as well. The yellow ones are only worth approx. $200.00 USD in excellent shape and the VERY RARE blue ones are worth considerably more. I have only learned of this and am by no means an expert. You should check John Deere collectors (believe it or not there are quite a few)

I picked up a Huffy Camaro at a yard sale. The bike seems to be in pretty good shape except that it's a bit sunfaded. It is a metallic green, with white camaro graphics and stripes. It also has a chrome front headlight integrated into the (gastank?) and a tail light. The seat is fine, no rips. Also, is has the original dual white striped tires in fairly decent shape (they hold air). Does anyone have any information on when this bike was produced or what it's worth, if anything? Thanks!

I just picked up a bike for $1 and i want to know ANY information on worth or where i can get parts on a 1950 - 1970(guess) Firestone Kingston? Ladies Cruiser. The gearing is in the rear hub and looks to me that it has most of the original parts and components.

I found a Sterling Tandem at a yard sale this summer. It is in good shape and the local bike sho said it was built in the late 1800's. It is a rear steering, spring loaded seatposts, tires, rims, and seats have been replaced (sometime in the 50's maybe the 40's) No rust and the paint is faded but we took of the name tag on the head post and the original color is a med. green. It has inch chainning and original (not chrome) plating on the handle bars. More info please. Call me @ 810.233.7446 or Fax me @ lscott@lycosmail.com Thanks ever so much Scott Whiting Even the snail mail will work 3168 E. Mt. Morris Rd. Mt. Morris, Mi. 48458-8992 Thanks again Scott

I have a Schwinn "Hollywood" with a ladies frame, 26" wheels, blue paint, chrome fenders. I think it was made in October of 1967 because the s/n starts with JC000000, is this true? My father bought the bike about twenty years ago and paid approx. $20.00 for it , it has been in our family ever since. What I want to know is what the approx. value of this bike today. It has all original parts except the rear reflector. Minor scrapes in the paint and minor dents in the fenders chrome has slight surface pitting. I work at my local shop and last winter, when business was slow I repacked all the bearings which hadn't been done since new( I don't think). I'm going to take pictures of the bike and if anybody can tell me more about the bike it would be greatly appreciated. I can Email pctures if you like. Thanks!

Doesn't anybody here do Monark or am I in the wrong discussion area? I've looked at all the archived stuff and found none mentioned. Anyway, my father-in-law has a 1940's (he was told) girl's 26" Monark in his antique shop. He's asking $125 and I told him he should probably up the price a bit. It is a sort of teal blue and white with some chrome on the frame and has chrome fenders. The huge chainguard is chrome with a plastic crown badge toward the front; "Monark" is barely visible and that is the extent of any legible insignia there. I can't see the headbadge because he's got it hanging from the ceiling in a jam-packed part of the store. I could, however, see that the coaster brake was a KOMET Super. The tires are not original and are 26x1.75. It has an original rear rack and one on the front that I believe is an add-on but looks to be pretty old as well. The seat is white and from what I can tell is in decent shape. The handlebars have been replaced and the grips are black so they likely have been too. It has a chrome horn tank that does not work. Serial# is 8866c9HO. Any info or direction greatly appreciated.
