WAIT WAIT WAIT!!!! A lot of bikes are best left UNRESTORED!! And if you've never done a restoration then by all means WAIT!! You might end up costing yourself a lot of money and ruining the bike!! Start by restoring and old middleweight. They are cheap and easy to find.

What are these bikes worth. The Raleigh is in very rough condition. I plan to clean it up and get it working smoothly. Needs paint. Girls with front and rear light and generator. 3-spd Sturmey-Archer Dyno hub. Brooks saddle is in good condition. Closed chaingaurd in rusted. Decal on bottom tube present. Nice badge on head tube. The Collegiate is an external 5-spd in excellent looking and running conditon. I often ride it to work. No rust, decals good. I give it an 8. The Hollywood is 24" white and pink. Painted rims (with rust) and fenders. Needs paint, runs well.I would appreciate any opinions of the value of these bikes.

A local shop has a '64 Sears Spacelinerfor $350. Overall, the bike is in excellent original shape, a couple of spots on the tank have been touched up with what looks like model paint but from 6' away you can't see it. A battery wire has also been broken but I belive I can easily fix it by re-soldering it.Everything else (especially the chrome) is near perfect. The kids who run the sales floor don't know anything about it(It belongs to the shop owner who's never around.) so I'm presuming it dosen't have the 2 speed rear.Is this a good price for this bike? I want it so bad I can taste it! :)

Message:
Whether a price of $350 for the bike is a good price or not is a difficult question to answer. A bike is worth exactly what one person will pay for it. All the shop needs is one buyer to put down $350 and they are all set. Personally, I have never seen a Spaceliner go for that much money, but then again I have never seen one in that nice a shape. The shop is clearly searching for a buyer who absolutely must have a Spaceliner in the best condition possible. Are you that person?

The fact that you've seen them before is what I'm curious about. If they show up 'all the time' for only @ $100. I'd like to know. (I'm new to the hobby and havn't been to any shows.)A web page for a Bicycle museum has their Spaceliner featured this month. They point out it took them 2 months to find an >acceptable< one. Just how lucky have I gotten? (IF I can raise the money in time!!!)

Offer him/her $300. Even 350 isn't too bad.I've seen girl's spaceliner tanks (with horn and light, but no lense) go for $100 at shows. If it is a boy's model, even $350 is good.

Subject: Value of '52 Schwinn and '65 Columbia
Entered on: Sep 25, 1997 22:52
Entered by: Bob Hufford

Message:
I ran across a bike at a bike repair shop today and I was wondering if you all could possibly identify it. It is a Schwinn (serial number says it's a 1952 model) with springer front and a non-cantilever frame (straight "middle" bar) with "sweetheart" chainring. It had been repainted (probably in the Sixties, pen-striping and flames), but the rest of the components seemed original except the chainguard and possibly the fenders. No tank, rack or light. The other bike is a '65 Columbia (no model noted on the chainguard or anything) that I found at a thrift store. I was in very nice condition except for some damage to the headtube decal and the "corners" of the rather square tank/light caused by a wire basket mounted to the handlebars. It is a candy-apple-red middleweight with tank/light combo, flat metal rear rack, red/white seat, and a very cool "doo-dad" on the front fender that looks somewhat like a chrome bird with "jewels" in the "wings" (red and blue I think). Except for the damage caused by the basket and some slight surface rust on the rims (white-walls by the way) the bike is *very* nice. Any idea on models names and values? Thanks! :-) Bob Hufford

I agree with jj, make an offer. These bikes are cool and I don't think this style of bike is properly appreciated. Actually I have seen a few middleweight "spacey" type bikes but they have mostly been girls models, the one boys bike (a Western Flyer Strato Flyer) I found is in my basement! I paid 175.00 for it, is it worth it? To me it is! I also have a girls Spaceliner, for reference I paid 75.00 for it.

The Schwinn sounds like a Spitfire, and might be worth a couple hundered bucks. The Columbia sounds like a Rambler (squared off tank, right?) and that, too would go for about the same.

Message:
Middleweights right now are still not coveted by serious collectors. The big-time dudes tend to go with men's ballooners and Sting-Ray Krates. I say GREAT!! Let them keep driving the prices up on those bikes, and let them keep ignoring the middleweights. And think of this: Ballooners were made for about 3 decades, while middleweights were only made for _about_ ONE decade. So let a few more people pass on the middleweights, and I'll keep grabbing and storing them!!!

On the John Deere bikes, I remember seeing some 10-speed machines back around 1976 or so. The nearest place you could buy a bike was ten miles, and you had your choice of the five and dime, Sears, or Western Auto. Then the local tractor place carried them. I want to say they had steel cottered cranks, steel rims, and Shimano Eagle derailleurs, but it's been 20 years since I last saw one. Oh, yeah - and all the ones I remember were green.

I finally met the owner of the shop that has the Spaceliner. (The shop sits next to where I do my laundry so I 'hang out' a bit.)He was really nice about filling me in on details of the bike...he repeated that the tank/console alone goes for $100 at shows...and most will be girls bikes (This is a mens bike.). He also pointed out where welds were most likely to break and showed that these were solid. (He also stated that this one was 100% original.) He wouldn't run it through layaway like one of his new bikes (said it was a pain collecting on those as it was.) but hinted he'd drop the price a bit. (Although he said he had refused a cash offer of $200.)RE: ThunderboltYou didn't say if it was a 26" or a 24" bike. >I'd< be tempted at $100 regardless just to have a bike with a tank but a 26 incher could make or break the deal. Another shop owner (not the one above) liked my early 60's Sears enough that we got to talking trade. He had a nice balloner (with tank) from the 40's that had been repainted with a 'marble' effect. (no name plate availible) While I liked the bike I had to turn it down because it was only a 24" and too small for me to ride.

It could possibly have had a "tank" It has original paint (orange) with white pinstripes on the fenders. The bike has a basket on the front, but I cannot tell if it would have been original equipment. I would like to know the aproximate age of the bike if anyone knows when Goodyear sold these models, and if anyone could point me in the direction of a tank assembly, if one existed. Thanks again

Someone is trying to sell me a Schwin Black Phantom. I do not yet have the serial #. Will have it in a couple of days. My 1st time seeing one I am unsure how one is should look. The bike frame was repainted poorly. The chain gaurd, handle bars, fenders and tires are original. The wheels have been repainted. The seat is torn. He wanted $300. I looked in the 1996 Kovels and found 2 listings; one for a fully restored boy's blk phantom for $3500 and a 26" men's blk phantom for $600. The man selling the bike says they are one in the same. Did Schwin make 2 sizes for the black phantom? He says NO?

Make sure you know what you are doing before you put down $300 on a black Phantom. There are reproductions out there as well as 'Phantoms' that really started off life as lesser models. Richard Truett (http://www.tiac.net/users/cabe/) is a real Phantom expert. I would suggest e-mailing him with some questions. He's very busy so you may not get a response, but it's worth the chance.

Hi! I just purchased a Schwinn Tandem this weekend for $125.00. I know that a bike is only worth what it is to the owner, but I was wondering if I got a good deal or not. It's green with the original pedals and handelbars, I'm not sure about the seats; the Schwinn logo on the chain guard is fading, and the only real rust problem is on the second set of handelbars and it's missing the front fender. If I check out the date code, will it still correspond to the code listings? (I haven't had a chance to do this yet). My brother and I took it out for a quick test drive and it ran great!! If there's anyone out there who knows about tandems please let me know how I did.

All of the parts a decals for the Donald Duck bike are available. Order a copy of Chestnut Hollow's (Ohio someplace) catalog and you will find what you need. I have no idea of the value in unrestored condition, but I do know they are highly collectable bikes. To restore it correctly, you should count on at least $600 for paint and decals, another $250 or so for rechroming, and $200 or so for misc other parts like spokes, tires, etc. This is assuming you do the work youself. It also assuming the bike is complete. If you need to replace rare trim parts of that bike, you could add up to another $500 to the restoration costs. However, if you do the restoration correctly, you will have a valuable and desirable bike worth more than you invested.

The boys Schwinn DX is a desirable model. I've seen asking prices for the 1940s model range anywhere from 500.00 to 1500.00 though the tank would be a hard and expensive one to find a replacement for. The Hollywood in great shape is probably not worth more than 100.00, maybe someday women's bikes will have more value than just as part bikes.

I bought a bike at an auction recently it is unrideable and worn out, but it has springs on the front axle and a place to insert a key to lock up the steering of the bike to pevent a theft. I do not know bicycle terminology, but if any one can tell me what else may be important to identify the bike I would appreciate it.

Sounds like a Schwinn with a locking fork springer. Does it have a horntank? Could be worth some big bucks in parts alone. For terminology, go to the vintage bike Glossary on this web site.

I am looking to sell an early '70s ('71 or '72 I think) Raleigh Professional, but need an approximate value. All of the components are Campy Nuovo Record including brakes, derailleurs, head set, hubs, pedals, and crank. The frame (24.5") is Reynolds 531 and the drops outs are Campy. Everything except the rims is in good to very good condition. The rims are fair. Any help in assigning a value would be helpful.

Call Bicycle Classics in Needham, MA and ask Michael. In fact, he would probably be interested in buying it.
