Message:
I picked up a complete but neglected Schwinn Varsity ladies' bike that is a magenta metallic color. The serial # is EN565807. I was wondering if there is any information and parts available. I would like an owner's manual, decal sets, paint, color matched handelbar tape, the light grey brake and derailleur cables, that sort of stuff. I am also curious how old and what degree of collectibility this bike have may have. I am in the process of overhauling this for my wife to ride. The wheels will be replaced with (much) lighter steel wheels of a similar look for now. I would, however like to restore the original wheels and hubs. Any suggestions? There is a speedometer by Huret (France) mounted on the handelbars, cable driven from an atatchment on the front hub and I think it should be kept if only for nostalgia. Was this strictly aftermarket, or was it some sort of option that Schwinn offered. This is the first bike I am restoring and would appreciate any suggestions that will lead to a super job. Thanks JODphoto@aol.com

Subject: Early 1950s COLUMBIA NEWSBOY SPECIAL

Message:
I have an early 1950s Columbia Newsboy Special and I'd like to sell it but would like to get an idea what it's worth. Mens model. Serial #R887310 -- (tried to locate mfg. date on a list of serial #s but number was not on the list, but original owner says he bought it around '51) Frame is basically the same as the 5-star model, but bike does not have all the "extras" that the more expensive models have (no tanks or lights) 26 x 2.125 studded balloon tires - blackwall, made by GoodYear, perfect with no dry-rot whatsoever. Paint is red with white tips and pinstripes on fenders. Paint is original and overall pretty solid, but with some nicks, very little rust, a few scratches -- especially on fenders. White parts were somewhat amaturishly touched up by original owner, but not bad. Most of the chrome is very good, with a bit of pitting on the bars, a little less on the front fork truss rods. Rims and crank look very good. Seat is original, somewhat yellowed vinyl, one very small (about 1") tear or abrasion on one edge. Grips may have been old replacements, but can't say for sure. Bike is straight, solid, mechanically sound and rideable (but heavy as hell). All complete, missing only the rear reflector. Anybody have some ideas on value?

A light on front of bike has a wire which leads to a generator on the front wheel - the faster you pedal, the brighter the light. The word Gloriu is stamped on the light generator. The bike is cobalt blue with ivory fenders, has an adjustable seat, a bell, and reflectors built into the back fender. Thanks for your help.

I'm getting ready to sell a Schwinn bicycle on auction, but need help in determining its value--Can somebody help?? The bike is Red & Yellow with a serial # of LQ592069. Male frame, 20x1.75 front tire & 20x1.25 rear tire. It has a yellow banana seat with a large red S in a circle on top & SCHWINN across each side. Has the front ID plate, saying Schwinn, Chicago, etc. I recently saw one exactly like this on auction, but it had the word STINGRAY written on the top of the frame, just between the seat & handlebars. Mine does not say that and I know that mine has not been repainted, so it could not have been painted over. Does anyone know the "name" of this bike?? Please let me know any info available. Thanks.....Carol

Message: Please HELP! I need help in determining the value of a bike that I bought in a yard sale. It is a 20" Columbia PLAYBIKE. The serial number on the frame is R844755. The bike has it's original bright green paint with white designs on the forks, frame and chain guard. The paint really shines and has very few chips and scratches. The bike has only a small amount of surface rust on the lower sections of the rear seat support and the handlebar stem. It has butterfly handlebars with clear grips that have silver glitter molded inside them. The banana seat is white with roll pleating and has no tears or cuts. An aluminum plate on the rear of the seat bears the name MESINGER. Both front and rear fenders and wheels are chrome and have absolutely no rust. The tires have hardly any wear and look to be original and yes, they hold air. The front tire is a TELLEBORG - size 20 X 1.75 and the rear tire is a PARAGON STUD - size 20 X 2.125. The bike has a coaster break made by BENDIX. This bike looks like it has been stored and ridden very little. Any help in determining it's value would be very appreciated. Message:
June 5, 1976, (I have all the original paperwork and warranty), I purchased a Schwinn LT-1 Lemon 26" LeTour- 10 Speed male bike at a Chicago suburb bike store. The salesman talked me into buying one of the most expensive racing bikes in his showroom which was far too big for my 5' 2" height, consequently needing a curb to get on or off the bike. Needless to say, I rode the bike little. My bike has it's orignial tires, paint, seat all of which are in excellent condition just dusty from sitting in my garage. I never wanted to sell it at a garage sale as I had paid so much for the bike I knew I would not get my money back. The salesman convinced me that this bike would have excellent resale value back in 1976...that was a poor reason to purchse the bike, now that I'm older and wiser, however, it is time that I sell it and get myself a female bike that is appropriate for my petite height. Like everybody else wants to know, I would like to know it's true value so that I don't regret that I sold it for a foolish price. Many thanks to anyone who knows.

Subject: Sting Ray and Ballooner pricing generally
Entered on: Sep 9, 1999 13:56
Entered by: Ken C (kcobb@bspmlaw.com)

Message:
Someone asked what is driving the resale market on those bikes. Actually, prices for those bikes have softened considerably this year, as more and more are being brought out of basements and into the market, at a faster rate than new collectors are joining the market. The market forces behind Sting Rays and Krates seems to be nostalgia, and there are a heck of a lot of guys who got their first taste of mobility-freedom on those types of bikes. Nostalgia also drives the balloon market, but only guys over age 50 ever rode them as kids, so the collector demand is lower than it is for the muscle bikes.

Subject: '76 LeTour and '58 Phantom pricing
Entered on: Sep 9, 1999 14:05
Entered by: Ken C (kcobb@bspmlaw.com)

Message:
Here is my two cents on the questions asked recently about those bikes. The LeTour is much more rare than its Schwinn contemporaries like the Continental and Varsity, but still isn't worth much, probably $150 or so, $200 tops. By the way, it is almost certainly not a 26" bike. It had 27" diameter tires, and the frame size should be measured from the center of the pedal crank to the top of the top bar. My guess is that it is probably no more than 22" or 24" in frame size. If you are advertising it for sale, you should mention the frame size. The '58 Phantom question is confusing because of the reference to a "Jaguar" frame. Do you mean that it was originally a Jaguar and has been repainted to look like a Phantom, or do you mean that it is an original, restored Phantom? If the former, it is worth no more than perhaps $500. If the latter, it might be in the $1000-1200 range. Incidentally, the Schwinn Phantom and Jaguar had the same frame, but the Jaguar rear drop-outs and front fork were narrower to accommodate the narrower 1.75" rims on the Jaguar.

Colsons are prized by collectors. Some can be priced in the $thousands in original condition. You might not want to restore it. You may be better off just cleaning it up. If it has the internal front suspension it's probably worth $2000 in it's current condition.

The back wheel is bent and the seat has a small tear in one corner. the bike is very small - maybe 18" to the seat. A friend had the same model as a child around 1970-1975. Any idea of the value? I was at an auction recently and passed on a 20" girls bike called an Indian Princess. It was apparently made by the Indian motorcycle co. It was in almost all original condition. The seat was not original and there was something missing on the handlebars, perhaps a light. The auctioneer knew that my husband has a bike shop and thought I was nuts for passing it up at $85.00. Please tell me the value of the bike so that I can kick myself a little harder.

Its a Girls DeLuxe American, in pretty darn good shape! A few small scratches on the left tank, but with original paint(pink/white), tires(26x1.75), tubes, handlebar tassels, seat is mostly pink w/ a little white and a white S in the middle, and chrome rear rack. It has S7 rims, bendix brake, working horn and light. The light lens is even perfect, and no batteries were ever put in the light or horn. It had a generator when got it at a local bike swap for $5! SN#C231667 The Phantom, and don't know if I paid too much, is in ok shape, but painted over the original, no lights, but tanks, wheels,Goodyear tires(26x2.125) and fenders. Paid a neighbor $200 and its Serial Number is P76863. I think that should mean 1957? Any help on the rarity, year,or value of the DeLuxe American would be great. Also, any comments on Phantom restoration or collecting or pricing would be cool too! Thanks a lot.

When I was 17 I joined the milatary for a 4 year stint and the bike disapeared. About two months ago my son and went to Ok to visit my older sister who had just had surgery. We got on the subject of bikes and I mentioned my old schwinn to my son and told him how proud of it Iwas when I was a kid. m y sister up and says I think that bike might ge here. I asked her what she meant and she told me that years back my stepfather gave her a bike so she could learn to ride. She taught herself and her kids and grandkids to ride on it. We went to her sons house and he some found my old bike in his 3 ACRE JUNKYARD. On the way back to Mo. my son told me he had never seen me so excited. I am trying to restore it now and cant wait to ride it in the local joly 4th parade. Im a 56 yr old disabled vet and have to go slow because of my income.
