I believe I have a 1907 Iver Johnson light weight bike. It has 28" wood filled wheelset, 7 looking seat post. The handle bar, stem and lower front fork ends are nickle plated. The drive mechanism is 1" skiptooth. The most distingushing mark is a additional single bar that (support) that is welded to the down tube/headtube which curves upward touching the top tube and back down into the seat tube. Is any one familiar with this bike or could give me some advise to restore it? Thanks Ed Santos San Jose CA. |
i've been interested in going to some shows or swap meets, but don't know where to look or go. if anyone knows of any in the Southern California area, especially Los Angeles, could you please let me know? thanks! |
I am looking for the stickers issued in the '70's from town bicycle registrations, and also, old bike dealer decals. I know they are hard to take off in one piece, and even harder to find in good shape, but there must be someone who collects them out there. Thank you, Bob. |

About a year ago I tossed out a bunch of old Raleigh and Sturmey-Archer 3-speed parts: New cables, triggers, pulleys, etc. I figured nobody would want them, seeing as I can find a Raleigh at the local Goodwill for $10 to $20 every day of the week. Now I see these things going for $15 to $35 each on Ebay. Why didn't I look around before tossing them? And they are so easy to pack! |

Does anyone know of a swap meet in the Milwaukee/Chicago area? |
Long Beach Veteran's Stadium. When is it held? Where is it located (cross streets) When is it held? Is it worth going to? Are there other bike swap meets in L.A, Orange, or Ventura counties? |
I have an older (20 years?) schwinn that has the rachet on the front sprocket rather than the back. What is the deal with this? Was it a special kind of bike? The rear sprocket is normal except that it is bolted to the rim rather than resting on bearings. I am working on it and I have no idea what the deal is with it. |
I have a real nice, early seventies, Raleigh 'folder'w/20" wheels.- All orig xcept new tires and grips, missing headlite.- In Illinois.- Whats it worth? |
I HAVE A HUFFY ELDORADO MEN'S BICYCLE FROM THE MID TO LATE 50'S. IT HAS 26" WHEELS AND A TANK WITH A LIGHT. THE LENS IS MISSING IN THE LIGHT. THE CHAIN GUARD IS ALSO MISSING. IT HAS THE ORIGINAL PAINT AND SEAT. WHAT DO YOU THINK THE VALUE WOULD BE? |
We rescued a matching pair of Schwinn Traveller his and hers in gold with gen's and lights. The leather bags are pretty much history but all else seems to work fine. They are three speed with hand brakes. chrome fenders. When were they made, and are they worth anything. We ride them now but some people have said they are worth to much to ride anymore? Any help would be appreciated Martin |

Well, I just came from the Vets. Was anyone else there? Is it always that anemic or was it just because of the threat of rain? Mark |

A friend of mine used to do this "lowrider trick" where using a ten speed bike he would sit on the bikes top frame bar and rest his feet on the front wheel nuts, thereby appearing to look like he was cruising on a Harley. I think you can guess what happened next. Yes, while performing this trick on MY new bike and cruising down hill his foot slipped off the front axle nuts and into the spokes, launching him and the bike. The bike came down with incredible force and bent the back rim such that when viewed from the rear it was in the shape of an L. As for my friend, luckily he landed in the grass next to the road with sprained ankle and sore head. |
I have N.O.S. front hub axle cones from, Al |

when riding a wheelie dont be stupid and loss crank power sucks huh? well if you have that troble this is what you do when you do a wheelie when your about to lose crank power you coast and then you start peddling again from wheelie expert |
Riding a Stingray on an asphalt parking lot. Hit speed bump, did cool wheelie, then front wheel fell off. Forks buried in the asphalt (had a tough time bending them back--the fork tips were splayed out about two inches per side) and I went face first over the bars and onto the pavement. Hot tip from 1975 or so--make sure those front axle nuts are tight before popping any wheelies on asphalt. |

has anyone heard of a date for the swap meet in ann arbor or saline michigan in april 2000 yet ? |
I used to race road bikes and on boring long group rides I would wait for a down hill run and coast past other riders superman style with my stomach lying flat on the seat and legs trailing behind me. It takes sit ups to sustain a long downhill. Can be done on any bike. Maybe guide the bars with your elbows and point your hands in front of you. Now that's stupid. |
While this is not a STUPID bike trick, it is quite amazing to watch and perform. With toeclips engaged, ride onto a soft grassy area, stop, fall over to one side, catching yourself with your hand. Gently lay the bike down on its side along with you on your side. Roll over on your back bringing the bike (still attached to your feet) up and over to the other side. Then push yourself back up on the back from that other side, and ride away! voila - an Eskimo Roll bicycle style! (this comes - loosely - from the kayak eskimo roll) It helps (esp. at first) to use a smaller frame than usual to make it easier to drop/catch and then raise and ride. Enjoy! |
go to D.T.E.lowriders, he does it...he did stuff for me...he's really good. |
Stupidest thing I ever did with a bicycle? Put my 1970 Mk1 Raleigh Chopper out with the trash. Should have known better... 'nuff said. BTW: anybody have one of those things for sale? In the Benelux? |
Does anyone know where I can get a drive wheel for a bike bug? The bike Bug was made by AquaBug Intl, Rockville Centre, NY in the '70s. I need a contact for spare parts. |

Subject: Both stupid on and stupid to a bike tales... Entered on: Oct 28, 1997 20:56 Entered by: Russ Message: Hooboy, nice topic! Back when I was a 14-15 year old kid in love with derailleur bikes, my riding cronies and I all acquired "clunkers." Mine was a 50's era Murray Ohio with 26x2 1/8-in gangster whitewalls, full fenders, chromed shocks up front and really bad brakes. I paid the princely sum of $5, American, for the bike in it's refinished in institutional green housepaint glory. Out came the model aircraft paints to daub on camouflage in a couple of shades of green and brown. This was a great woods bike for the mountains of Virginia, if you didn't mind walking much of the time. But the really dumb thing I did was go ICE RIDING on it. Remember, ballooner, 50 odd pounds, bad brakes? Well, the thing was to rev up some speed on the thing and charge down the hill to the pond and roar out over the ice. Halfway across one stood on the bike and locked the brakes on for a skid. Done right, one skated upright across the pond to the other side. Bear in mind, I couldn't swim at the time (I'm still rotten at it!), plus the dangers of shock in icy waters, the weight of bike, etc., etc... As someone phrased it in Hemingway's For Whom The Bell Tolls, this was "a great stupidity." Subject: Stupid is as Stupid does Entered on: Oct 29, 1997 08:46 Entered by: Pintobean Message: I used to really impress everyone with my "Backwards Wheelies". I'd get up some speed and then jam my foot between the frame and the back of the front wheel. This in turn caused the rear of the bike to rise into the air, at which time I'd quickly remove my foot and ride on the front wheel for a few feet. Very impressive except for the times I'd accidentally jam my foot into the spokes instead of the back of the wheel. I never really got hurt, but the crashes were usually pretty spectacular and my friends hated it when I did that. Anyway, the Stupid Bike Trick I am most known for is the repeated jumping of a Columbia Beater 195? until the frame decided to let go at the head tube. Just take a concrete block, lay it on its side, lean a 2x12 about three feet long against it. Pump your heavy, high geared bike up the hill, turn around and haul ass downhill , hit the ramp at full speed. Repeat as necessary. Thought I would show my kids how we used to pull wheelies on these old Muscle Bikes (bear in mind that I hadn't tried this for over 15 years and have increased my weight by double). The first one was pretty feeble, only got it up a foot or so. The next one was a beauty ... until my bulk crossed the apex and I ended up on my ass in the middle of the street with the bike perched above me. My wife and neighbor fell down laughing. I was laughing. My kids just shook their heads. We've found performance and handling to be like this, in decreasing order of performance: .....1) A fenderless Sting-Ray with a Schwin nobby fore and aft does the best......2) The same setup without a nobby in front.... 3) A nobby on the rear, but with fenders. Your first few hundered feet are ok, but then the snow packs up under the fenders. .....10000) The worst is a heavy bike with a 16" front wheel and a rear slik, fenders fore and aft. I had one of those big old Schwinn's you could haul a ton on. I had my friend Joe sitting between the handle bars, and John was sitting on the rear carrier. We rode across one of the longest bridges in our town, laughing all the way. I never heard the motorcycle policeman behind me. When we reached the end of the bridge he pulled me over. He made us walk the bike home and promise to never ride triple again. Only on a Schwinn could this have been done. Subject: Entered on: Nov 24, 1997 16:42 Entered by: Morgan Message: My first bike was a used Schwinn with all the goodies-- sprung fork, front drum brake, fork lock, etc. I loved that bike, but nearly castrated myself with it. What happened was that I thought it would be neat to ride into the two trees in our yard that rose in a "V" from the ground. I frequently parked my bike there, and I reasoned that if I placed a big pile of grass clippings just beyond the "V", I could ride into the tree at high speed and go flying to a soft landing in the clippings. There was just a teeny miscalculation, though, and I stopped when I hit the stem with my crotch. I wasn't sure I'd sur- vived until I fathered a couple of kids about 15 years later. There was a grate in the pavement in a parking lot that had a wider metal bar in the center of the grate. It was the same width as my tires. I would get up a lot of speed, aim the bike just right, and ride over the grate on that bar. One day I missed and my front wheel went into the grate, and my bike fell on top of me. I had a 2nd degree burn on one of my arms from the hot pavement before I could get the bike off me! I think of that whenever I see I storm drain grate. Well, one day one of my retarded freinds suggested thatI didn't possess the manhood to ride off the roof of my parents' house. I looked up, calculated the distance from the roof to the ground to be 10-12 feet, and decided to put a small ramp just at the gutterlin(one cinderblock and a 2 foot long board. I proceeded to lug my Schwinn predator up on the roof, and ride down the roof towards the ramp. As I hit the ramp, it slid into the gutter, and I pulled up as hard as I could.I managed to land on the wheels, bounce and the I flipped over the bars and rolled about 100 times (it sure seemed like it!) I was only minorly injured (BRUISES and such), but the Skyway Tuff wheels on my bike had cracked the hubs (the older metal hubs..) and my handlebars (WALD) had spun forward almost to the tire. I relinquished my duties as Ramp tester that day.... |

You can make some excellent extended forks using chrome piping from a publing supply shop. You can cut dropouts off of an old frame and weld those n (assuming you've got access to welding equipment). I don't think paint stripper will harm the AL frame. |
I would be careful in my choice of materials for front fork fabrication. Always bear in mind that the fork is the difference between your face and the pavement. Plumbing supply stores sell two kinds of pipe-too heavy, in the case of water pipe, and too weak, in the case of chrome plated brass lavatory drain tubing. Bike-grade tubing and dropouts should be got from specialist builder-oriented outfits like Gaerlan. http://members.aol.com/Gaerlan123/bike.html Regarding stripping an aluminum frame: Chemical strippers are the way to go, I've never had any damage from the stuff. Be careful with abrasives, though. I wouldn't recommend steel brushing; I'd just give it more stripper in the stubborn areas. A toothbrush is okay, though. I would recommend using bronze wool in very fine grades for polishing the surface of the metal. This can be followed by a cloth polishing wheel with a suitable polishing compound, if you want it chrome-like. A treated metal-polishing towel like Cape Cod will keep it looking that way. Concerning the use of a front sprocket on the rear hub: Presuming that you also use a front sprocket at the crank location, you will have an extremely low gear ratio, with consequent slow speed. Visually, it's nice to have a big disc back there. Maybe you should consider something like the Hayes hydraulic disc brake, as seen at http://bikerodnkustom.homestead.com/wheels.html I'm afraid it would get kind of crowded back there, but it might be possible to do it. Just for visual effect, it seems possible to graft one of those chrome pieplate-like "chain protector" discs (as seen on my Schwinn Continental 10-speed)to the hub. It would look pretty cool and you would have protected spokes, too. |
Thanks for the tips to all who responded. I had a computer crash and just got back up and running so now I can respond. I am still looking for fork tubes and BMX style flat blade dropouts. I found a good source of chromoly thru Aircraft Spruce but did not buy it until I can find dropouts of like material. Any help? Does anyone make custom BMX frames, forks, and dropouts? All of the web sites I have found for custom bike builders are for road, track and mt. bikes. |

Have a maroon 1968 Sears Spyder FS. Original 'slick' tire in rear and knobby (?) on front. The sissy bar in the rear does not extend beyond 3 or 4 inches from the rear of the banana seat. I know some came with really long chrome extended bars on the rear. I do *not* havethe original SEARS as supplied literature although I am the **original** owner. Got it when I was 10 years old. We recently purchases a old schwinn from the swapmeet. We don't know much about this bike. We also asked a couple of Schwinn collectors if they know approx. what year. Their guess is between 1941-1950's. Distinctive piece of this bike is the badge that reads B.F.Goodrich Schwinn built. Serial # is E91673. If you know anything on this bicycle or approx. what year please let us know. Thank you |
Has anyone been to the monthly swap at Long Beach Veterans Stadium and how does it rate. Any info on any other swaps in the area? Thanks |
I just heard about this one: Swansea, Mass, 11/14/99. Free indoor swap meet. Contact Joe at 508-669-5222 |

Thanks for the plug, Vin! It's good to hear about your new retail outlet, too. We at BR&K do a lot of lurking on the Menotomy lists; it's a good way of finding what interests people. The Ultimate Bike piece in the current issue is there because we spotted a flurry of discussion about it in one of the lists. Anytime we see a particularly well-composed post on the lists, we tend to invite the poster to be a BR&K contributor. Here's something I'm curious about: NYC bike messengers tend to wrap their bike frames in duct tape, especially the black cloth type of tape. Can anybody tell us why they do that? Real information would be good; but crazy theories would be fun to hear about, also. |
email me when you have a krunk ass lowrider bike under 200 dollars |
RE: krunk ass lowriders - I don't know what that means, but do know Menotomy is going to be carrying lowriders again and they they'll be under $200. As for the messenger bikes, my top two guesses would be: 1) to disguise the actual brand of the bike so as to discourage theft 2) Uhh, Maybe I should have said I have only one guess |
