Subject: 1969 Sears Screamer 5 spd with drag brake for trade.

Message:
I have a 1969 sears screamer 5 spd with the drag brake on shift console. It has been repainted orange. Paint was done well. Missing chain gaurd and one brake cable. Seat bar and shocks are painted silver. Seat is in fair shape with some cracks and a small bit off the very front. There is a black knob on the brake shift and I think this was orig. a red knob. Has rear slick with double white lines. Rear rim is decent although I'm not sure if it is the orig.. I have another wheel to go with it. Front wheel, handlebars, springer, fenders and other chrome is in decent cond. Has some very light rust in some spots but nothing that a bit of chrome cleaner might take off. Bike would be a fairly easy restoration. It is a sharp bike. I would like to trade this bike for another 20" x 16" chopper style 5 spd bike in either the same cond. or some what rusty but comp. and restorable. Looking for slingshot, swinger, wedge or anything similar. Email me for pics. if interested. Mike - taz400ci@aol.com

Could have sworn I saw a new Apple Krate Cruising down Swanston St, Melbourne, Australia. Five speed on the stick and a huuuge 4 ft sissy. No way it was an original, cos' we never had them here. Might be a restored import, but i doubt it. I have a salvage yard almost full of 70's Aussie muscle bikes, just waiting for the craze to take off here. Heard of a couple of restoreds in Sydney, too. Want one of those Schwinns. BMX Sucks, Muscle Forever!

Where is the serial # located on a Schwinn Pea Picker? I still have the one I was given for my 12th birthday in April of 1969 and the prices being paid in E-Bay are just too tempting. I have decided to sell it to finance other hobbies & projects. Can anyone suggest better sale venues than E-Bay? Thanks in advance! Robert

I am in shock! I was going on my mom's memory regarding the year I received my Pea Picker. I just went down to the garage to verify it. It starts with AE! January 1969! It must be one of the first ones built! Didn't Schwinn start the Krate models in '69? It even has the original green stripe tire in back. The longer I look at it, the more the memories flood in. Many, MANY thanks to all who created this information resource. Robert

Message:
I'm new here but interested. I have a Sears 24" male Spyder. 5 speed. Model # 502.459520 with all original papers, probably 1976 or so. It's complete and original except missing reflector. Has a Royce Union speedometer, tho' it may not be original equipment. Paint is quite good but fair amount of rust on chrome. Decals are pretty much intact. Seat is in good shape. A couple of questions: A rough estimate of value as is? I can handle the chrome clean up or rechrome but should I (or should I justleave it alone)? Value if I refinish the chrome? Thanks for any help/advice. Bout

I have been given a chopper bike that I wanted to restore, but i'm not sure what I have gotten. It is a Sears bike with a 20" cheater slick on the back, and a 16" on the front. It has a 5 speed shifter and a parking break combination. The chrome has polished out, but the paint needs something done with it. Is powder coating the proper thing to do, or is paint still the way to go? Is there places out there to get things like cables for the breaks on this thing, or would that be a swap meet item?

I have a 1970 Raleigh Rodeo that I have owned since new - my 8th birthday. It has 5 speed deraiileur (not a 3 + 2). THe only missing original parts are the seat - it originally had a thick, squarish seat, the pedals - which were solid black rubber, and the tires, which were (if I remember right) Dunlop, 24 x 1 3/8. Can anyone help me find these parts, and point me to any other websites which have info on these bikes? Thanks

I have 2 "Swing bikes" that I want to restore. I'm not sure of the year they were made. I think it was in the late seventys. The unique thing about these bikes is that they turn at both ends. The seat, rear wheel and pedals are one unit and turns by pulling the frame one way or the other. They have 20" slicks on back and 16" on the front, with chopper style handle bars and a banana seat. Where can I find parts?

I've posted test messages here, just to see what kind of people responded when I ask about the value of a bicycle. You'll not see a lot of answers here, but if you've got a rare bike, the collectors who read these forums will email you and make a low-ball offer. SO DO YOURSELF A FAVOR: PICK UP SOME KIND OF PRICE GUIDE!! There are 2 collectors who read these forums who must be working together, because they both gave the same offer ($75) on a bike that is worth 10 times that much. If I was an unsuspecting seller, I would have said: "Hey, two different experts said it's worth $75, so I'll sell it for that"..... Watch out folks, don't sell your old Stingray or Dad's loaded balloon tire bike based on a price told to you by a BIASED BUYER!

I don't see what the draw is for Stingrays and such. Yeah, maybe stingray and muscle bike collectors had one when they were kids, and maybe they want one like it. But after restoring one like your old bike, why buy any more? Those bikes aren't that old and they really aren't that unique. And ya can look a bit silly riding one. Those are just my opinons and questions. I don't meant to offend. Do any of you stingray collectors own full size ballooners? You know, a bigger bike with fat balloon tires and a tank and rack and lights and doodads that you can realy ride and look good on?

Hi Matt. I just got into this hobby. I'm not even sure what the reason is... I picked up an old Sears 20" Spyder a few months ago while looking for a bike for one of my kids. (Yes- it reminded me of my bike when I was a kid)! Got me talking to some people and interested in Schwinn Stingrays. At first all I found was a Lil Chic and a Fairlady, then I lucked-out and found two Stingrays in one week! Yes... I did pick up a 1962 Schwinn American 26" (I guess technically a middleweight). What a deal... got it at a police auction. Apparently someone had stolen it and did a quick "paint bomb". I took paint stripper and wiped off the whole bike about 2" at a time and then waxed the whole bike... it's now the nice blue original color! I haven't ridden it yet- still needs a few details fixed. The bummer is, I live in an apartment, and the 26" really takes up a lot of room! I told my wife I was done searching for Stingrays now that I have two... truth is, for me the fun is in "the search"! PS- True story...I have a friend who found a Fastback 5spd IN THE GARBAGE a few weeks ago!

I grew up in the stingray era and did not own one at the time though I remember riding them. I do however enjoy riding them now. Granted they are not as practical as the ballooners but if I wanted practical I would stick to my mountain bike. No other bike in my collection attracts more attention than my Lemon Peeler (and I don't mean laughter). And if you think they are not unique, just look at the accessories that were avalable.

Subject: Why Sting-Rays....
Entered on: Jul 7, 1999 10:29

Message:
It was the Sting-Rays (and other off-brand muscle bikes, particularly the 16x20 models) that sucked me in to bike collecting. I've since sold all of the muscle bikes (which I think are currently overpriced) and bought balloon tire bikes (which I think are currently way underpriced). On the bike path, both the muscle bikes and ballooners get a lot of attention, but the ballooners are so smooth and so cool and so stable and so 'classic', that I think they are seen as much more rare... Also, it's getting more common to see banana seat and monkey handlebar bikes in bike stores, but how often do you see a man's or woman's fat tire bike with a tank and a rack and a springer? Usually you only see these bikes hanging over a fern bar somewhere, or in a Pee Wee Herman re-run. Either way, buy what you like and ride what you buy!

But well... it's a cross between a muscle bike, and a bike that a wuss would ride... it's really preppy kinda looking, 5 speed sucker, but has a shifter like you'd find on a touring bike... of course it's a 20 inch bugger... high rise handlebars goofy seat, looks like a bananna kinda.... but more square... Okay, now that I sound like I have been smoking something I'll stop... just please, tell me if I make sense... Dave

Hi. I've purchased a Stingray with a Serial# beginning MR which should make it Dec. 1980. I did'nt realize they were still making Stingrays that recently. The chain guard is shaped differently and the paint job is unlike earlier Stingrays - ywt is says Stinray on the frame - I think it says Hurricane on the chain guard. The seat is a banana style and has high bars. I know the Typhoon had more BMX style to it (yuk) My bike hasn't arrives yet so this is all the detail I have. The forks are yellow where the frame is red. Since I don't find any mention of this model in my StingRay book I take it that collectors completely dicount this model. Your comments would be welcome. If the bike really is considered a total Stingray "no count" then I'll probably customize it, although the pics I've seen of it lok pretty cool. Sorry for such a lengthy message.

Serial # starts MR which would be Dec. 1980. I didn't know they made Stingrays that late. They're not mentioned in my Stingray book. Is this bike totally undesirable for collectors? Since its not mentioned in the collector book I have I suspect that might be the case. Your comments would be appreciated, and info as to what this bike is. It has a banana seat and hi bars and Stingray is painted on the seat post downtube. I know they had the Tornado, a quasi BMX bike (yuk) - I think this one may be called a Hurricane. The Chain guard is shaped a little diff. from other Stingrays. The forks are yellow while the frame is red. Other trim is yellow. It appears from the pix to be a stock bike and pretty kool looking. I don't see it in me Stinray book. I've only seen pix of the bike - it hasn't arrived yet. Is this bike totally un-collectable? Comments welcome.. if it turns out this is bike is a real dud collector-wise I'll probably customise it. I don't know, tho it looks kinda kool. Thanks, Em

I'm not very sure bout numbers or dates as you might have noticed from postings all around these baords, but you have to really appriciate everything, whether it be a true classic or not. I mean the repro stuff that's a little different, but at least they are trying :) I don't do this for collectors values, I rarely even show off what I do to some of these machines... what I do is ride them, and enjoy putsing round with them... prioritize what is more important, the fact of your ray being a true classic, or just a work of art that you think is awesome... LIke I said, I don't know you, and I hope you don't take offense to anything I say (coming from a 17 year old). Dave

Scott, Were the $500 Krates you saw repros? I think the cheapest ORIGINAL krate I've seen was $750. I have this theory that's why Schwinn repro'd the krates as coaster brake (no five speed) models, so as not to reduce the value of the originals, but still be a cool bike.

The bolt that goes into the gooseneck should have a threaded wedge that goes against the bottom of the gooseneck. When you tighten the bolt, the wedge 'wedges against the gooseneck and steering tube and keeps it from turning or sliding. You can find them at any bike shop, usually w/ new bolts.

Krate prices all depend on condition and originality. original paint and parts go for more $, if it has a disk brake even more. The repro stuff is cheaper quality than the real stuff, but the original stuff is big bucks. prices range from $300 and up. send me an email if you need more info or want to sell it.

No, a Sting-Ray Junior is not a Sting-Ray II. The Junior is a little smaller than a standard Sting-Ray and has shorter cranks. The Junior was made for many years, right along with the regular 'Rays. The Sting-Ray II came out in the late 1970's, I believe, when the standard 'Rays production stopped.

Hi. Does anyone know if '66 SlikChiks were sold new with shorter (like Jr. Stingray) handlebars? My recently purchased '66 has such shorter bars, and I thought they probably were not original to the bike, and was looking to replace them.. but then I noticed in Liz Fried's Stingray book on pg. 27 it shows an old ad w/ SlikChik, as well as smaller Schwinns, and the SlikChik pictured DOES have shorter bars! The FairLady next to it has regular bars. My old '68 or '69 childhood SlikChik (long gone) had regular size bars. I hate to ditch the shorter bars because they've got excellent white chubby grips. If anyone happens to know about this "handlebar discrepancy" I'd much appreciate your comments! Thanks, Em

I went to the Woodward Dream Cruise in Detroit on Saturday Aug. 20, 1999. There were tens of thousands of people and thousands of cool cars. I rode my 1999 Apple Krate on saturday. I got a lot of comments on the bike and turned alot of heads. I know this event is for cars, but I would like to see all of the classic bikes at that event as well. There is so much traffic on Woodward that the bikes could keep up. There were other bikes on Woodward on saturday. I saw a Grey Ghost and 1999 Orange Krate. There were 26 inch cruisers. And a very tall cruiser, maybe 35 inch wheels? I had never seen a bike like that before. There were a couple of scooters. One scooter had 7 inch wide go-kart slicks on it. I would like to see 500 bicycles in a group on Woodward next year. That would be COOL! Sent in your feedback. I am going to check the dates for the 2000 "Woodward Dream Cruise". Use a search engine to find pictures of the "Woodward Dream Cruise". ken

'Zines being defined as low-budget, special interest, limited quantity magazines. I am interested in doing a zine about old bikes, which I am very interested in. I have 2 Schwinn middleweights and an AMF middleweight from the mid '60's. I am asking for your help in this endeavor. I would like to request any stories, essays, anecdotes, etc. that you folks would be willing to submit about old bikes. Any old bikes - musclebikes, ballooners, middleweights, etc. Any good material will be included in the final print. Tell us what you ride, and why. Stories about your first bikes. What you love (or hate) about old bikes. Anything that would be interesting. I will also consider putting in a few photos of bikes, provided you can e-mail me a high-resolution photo of your bike. The format for this project will probably be about 20 5.5 x 8.5 pages, so I don't have a whole lot of space for exceedingly long stories. The ideal length would be between 1-4 paragraphs for stories. I would also love to have a few 1 or 2-liners for some filler or margin material, so send any good quotes or observations. If I get enough good material, and if I enjoy doing the first, I may do a second issue, and possibly keep going beyond that. It just depends on how much good stuff I can come up with and I can get from other collectors. I would appreciate any help you can provide. Please send only stuff that you have written personally, instead of other people's stuff you have copied from forums such as this. This way I can credit the material to you, which by the way, I plan to do. So if you do send material, please include your name and city. • Have a lot more resources available to Vintage Bicycle collectors.
  • It'll be a while before we've made the new site reach it's full potential, but you can start using it right now: oldroads.com
