Hello, my bike's not quite vintage (mid-eighties), but maybe someone can help. The Torapado I got when i was 14 is coming back to me (yehaw!) but the fork is rotted out. I'd like to replace it with original equipment (embossed "T" semi crown). Anyone have one, or know where to get one?

VINTAGE LIGHTWEIGHTS:   Gitane 10 speed, Information? posted by: Skip Echert on 4/15/00 at 12:55:18 PM
Hello - can anyone help me with information on this Gitane 10-speed road bike? I recently noticed it at the side of the road, marked only with a big "FREE" sign. (I couldn't pass it up, but had no owner to thank.)
Light green frame with gold paint in lug windows, ½ chrome stays. Serial No. 54139 stamped into right rear (flimsy) dropout. On the seat tube foil wrap" "GITANE" "CAMPIONS du MONDE" "?CORDM?N de I'HEURE" (?=letters missing). Markings on top inside of downtube "TUBES" "FLASH". On fork - shield with "Fuseaux" above "DURIFORT" and some other word below in script. Pivo stem, no- name Al. handlebar, NERVAR steel 3 arm cottered crank set. EXCELTOO "Competition" aluminum hubs. Threads on right side of rear hub for freewheel AND on left side of hub (as spare?). Hubs held on with wing nuts (very cool). REGINA steel 27"rims, stainless, double butted, spokes, 3 pointed star on spoke heads. Campy (Old) Record rear derailleur with marking "13 - 36" on inside of body. MAFAC brake levers with green rubber half hoods (mostly gone). MAFAC "Dural Forge" calipers.

The Campy derailleur (in perfect shape) dates to mid-to late- 60s, but did it come originally on the bike? Any information - date of manufacture, model name, original selling price, higher and lower Gitane models of the time, etc, would be greatly appreciated.

VINTAGE LIGHTWEIGHTS:   Campania Gran Sport posted by: Mark R. on 4/9/00 at 9:37:23 PM
Hi,

Recently i picked up a bike as follows:

Cost to me: $45 Canadian
Make: Campania
Model: Gran Sport
Colour: Yellow with chrome stays
Equipment: Suntour VGT Luxe rear der., campania brakes (c. pull), 27" alloy japanese wheels (can't rem. name), H. McIver double-butted tubing (decal on frame) the rest is mostly SR Royal or Sakae.

I've a feeling it may be a Japanese bike designed to look Italian.
After extensive searches on the WWW i have found very little info'.
Do you know anything about this manufacturer?
Thanks very much for your help.

Mark

PS I completed a 5/20k Duathlon on the bike here in Vancouver, BC just yesterday. The bike performed beautifully, no wobbling around what were some pretty fast corners and a nice smooth ride.

AGE / VALUE:   F.A. Lipscombe posted by: Colin on 4/5/00 at 7:18:13 PM
Howdy from North of the 49th. Last year I scooped a sweet-looking English touring bike with FA Lipscombe on the downtube. Wierd name, great bike. Tall plush and overbuild, just like a Rolls.
While having no clue who Frank Lipscombe, of 185-187 Markhouse Rd. Walthamstow, E.17 is/was (as per the head decal), here is what I do know: brakes-Mafac centerpull; hubs-high flange Record; H set-Record; R derailleur-Nuovo Record, F der.-Strata (?); crank-Stata triple 48/45/42. Frame is oven-baked yellow with 3/4 chrome on th3e stays and fork. Black brush pinstriping around lugs and fancy design on seatstay caps. Oh yeah, and full 531!
Although the saddle and bar tape had been changed, judging by the state of drivetrain and graese in bearings this bike has 300k on it, if that. I threw on a new Brooks--the one with the big brass rivets--cause it was only right. I cahnged the gearing with a Rally unit from Bicycle Classics and a new Mailliard 14-32 5spd I found in a pawn shop.I've tried to keep it 'full retro'.
I've come to love this bike; it eats rough roads for lunch, and will be my faithful touring companion for many years to come. SO, does anyone have more info on this make? From what I know, it's maybe a '67 or a '69. Can anyone help me out? I can't find anything on the Web.
Colin.

I just picked up a Hercules bicycle (or so it says on the badge) today for $20. Was this a good deal? How old is this thing? It has good black paint, presentable chrome, a diamond frame, Sturmey-Archer 3-speed rear hub, two-tone saddle, and pinstriped fenders. On the chainguard, there is a small emblem on the top left corner that says "AMF", and in the center, in big cursive letters, Hercules is written. Any help appreciated.

VINTAGE LIGHTWEIGHTS:   James Fothergill frames posted by: Paul on 4/1/00 at 2:53:57 AM
I have a 1960's English hand built frame. It was built by James Fothergill of Liverpool, England. I bought it second hand in the late '60's and I don't know who the first owner was. In 1980 I wrote to James Fothergill and I still have his hand written reply, but he was unable to give me the frame's history as all his records had been lost. He did say that he still built the occasional frame (In 1980). I've never seen another Fothergill, and never found anyone who owns one.
Anyone know anything about them? It's a beautiful piece of work, and I'll never part with it, but I'd like to know more about these frames generally. Until yesterday I was still riding it, but as I stood to climb a short hill one of the front fork drop outs sheared at the point it is brazed into the fork tube. Well... after almost forty years of use I think the guarantee might have run out so I won't be complaining to Fothergills. I'm presently looking at my options and taking the opportunity to strip the frame and do a complete rebuild.
Anyone here come across Fothergill frames?
Paul.

VINTAGE LIGHTWEIGHTS:   Brools Professional Saddles posted by: Dave Shoe on 4/1/00 at 12:51:46 AM
I'm trying to learn a little about the large copper rivet Brooks Professional saddle that currently sells for about $79. It's been around for 30 years plus, but I've never been very knowlegdeable about them.

My question relates to the "Pre-Softened" impression on the top of the leather. I don't recall seeing this impression back about 25 years ago and wonder when (what year) it first showed up.

Also, I wonder how easy it is to find the non-"Soft"-embossed version of the large-rivet Brooks Pro saddles and how useful the leather is after many years pass. I also wonder when/if it's production was stopped.

If anyone has any info, I'm very interested to learn more.

VINTAGE LIGHTWEIGHTS:   Don Farrell identification posted by: Bob on 3/28/00 at 1:17:52 PM
Last year I was given a bicycle by a friend of my father's - more or less complete. The bike is a Don Farrell, which was given to him in the mid 60's to take to the dump on behalf of a friend. He decided to keep the bike and 'restored' it to a useable condition. Time has taken it's toll and it now needs rebuilding.

I would like some information on this bike, ie. date of manufacture, model, etc. I am especially interested in colour as no original paint exists, and transfer detail if any - Don Farrell was based in Edgeware, Middlesex, England. As far as I am aware the bike was already around 10 years old when it was to be dumped.

The frame has odd fork ends at the rear, the right one is a Benelux and the left one is a Cyclo. It has brazed on cable guides on the top of the bottom bracket for both front and rear changers, and it has a curved brake cable stop between the seat stays. It also has a brazed on gearlever boss. I am assuming it is 531 but am not certain. The lugs are fairly ornate but not fussy. The frame number is stamped on the underside of the bottom bracket.

The wheels have Normandy large flange hubs with round holes as opposed to slots and it has Wiennman rims. The rear hub is double sided for both fixed wheel and free wheel with Campag q/r skewers. The rear hub is 40 hole, and the front is 36.

Brakes: Centre pull Coureur 66 calipers
Levers: GB Superhood with adjusters
Seat: Brookes leather cutaway
Stem: GB forged Hiduminrum with drilling for front brake cable stop
Seat Post: Birmalux alloy
Handlebars: I.T.M. alloy
Rear Changer: Campag gran sport (steel)

If anybody has any information however small, I would be very pleased to hear from you. Thank you, Bob

VINTAGE LIGHTWEIGHTS:   Plea for Schwinn Dealer Specifications posted by: Bob Hufford on 2/24/00 at 2:53:47 PM
Who out there has the Schwinn Dealer Specification Books (or whatever they're called -- the ones that list the bikes with the parts used -- as seen in the Collectible Schwinn Sting-Rays and Collectible Schwinn Middleweights books put out by Gordon/Hurd) and the dealer price lists per year? I'm trying to gather together the specs on the Schwinn drop-bar lightweights from 1960 - 1980. I'd be happy with a subset for just Super Sports from the years '64 - '73 for a start.

I know each of these years is probably represented by you literature collectors out there (as a whole). Gordon/Hurd will, in all likelyhood, not be publishing a book for us admirers of the Varsity, Continental, Super Continental, Sierra, Sprint, Superior, Super Sport, Sport Tourer, LeTour, Super LeTour, Volare, Voyageur, and Paramount (and what ever other models I've left out) While were at it we could possibly toss in the Breezes and Suburbans.

With Schwinn's permission and the resources of those of you with the books, we could put a Collectible Schwinn Lightweight reference book together for very little cost.

I've checked with Schwinn and they don't have this information.

Help out the hobby! Share the wealth!

AGE / VALUE: Terrot Dijon (Redux) posted by: Mark Hineline on 2/23/00 at 7:06:53 AM
I'm still trying to learn something about this bicycle. More details: The frame has a sticker on the seat tube that says "Inoxydable," which I take it means stainless steel. On the down tube is a decal that says "Terrot" in a recumbant diamond. Badge on head tube says "Terrot" and "Dijon." Also, on the seat tube, is a decalled crest that matches the badge. Above that, in a chevron, is a decal that says "Tube Special Allege Peugeot." And finally, where the down tube meets the head tube, a lion crest decal and the words "Made in France." The rims still have stickers on them that say "Chrolux" and "Rigida." The spokes were painted yellow to match what look like Nervex lugs. I can't say much about the Herot components, except that they seem to be rather low end (relative to the appearance of the frame). Cranks are cottered. Frame is in royal blue paint, with 8" of chrome at the ends of the fork, seat and chain stays. I know that Terrot Dijon was a brand of motorbike, and of bicycles in the more distant past. Does anyone know anything about this bicycle?

VINTAGE LIGHTWEIGHTS:   27" Schwinn tires posted by: Martin on 2/22/00 at 7:02:59 PM
* I,ve just bought a '79 Schwinn Varsity...hey, hey, stop laughing! It's true, it's barely vintage (but it's a sixties design), and it sure ain't lightweight, but nevertheless it is beautiful, very green, in great shape and all original except for the tires. There-in lies my problem. According to info I read somewhere on one of these pages, though Schwinn had some odd rim sizes the 27" ones should be standard. It had recent Specialized and Kenda 27 X 1 1/4 tires on it both with major flat spots where the bead was slipping into the centre channel. I've now tried a different Specialized as well as a Continental ("mount only on hook type rims") with the same results. All these tires are euro size 32-630. Tried massaging, under and over-inflating, soapy water, kind words, swear words...no luck. Called my local bike stores (the few guys that have been around for a while) and got an equal number of different answers-no disrespect intended. The one suggestion I haven't been able to test is that my rims were made on a Monday. I've also scanned this site as well as the archives. I would prefer to not have to replace the rims, steel shines so beautifully you know, and I really don't want to spend much money on this one either, though new tires that fit would be nice. I don't want to inhibit creativity and again, no disrespect intended, but I have lots of wild guesses. Does anyone Know The Answer?
* Thanks for your time, I appreciate this resource,
* Martin

An ode to the common man's components.

Sunshine is the unsung hero of vintage lightweight bikes. A lot of 70's and 80's lightweights sported Sunshine hubs, and many more had their quick release skewers. No, they weren't Campy, or Suntour, or certainly not Shimano. They made their mark in numbers, and their chrome holds the rust out.

Second Q: When did the little brake cam change from "Campagnolo" to just "Brev. Camp," (part # 2005)???

Thanks if anyone can help. Oh, Please write in to Cycles de Oro's Classic Rendezvous and tell them Al Eisentraut belongs on the list of "current builders listing," not just the "American master's of the past." He's still doing "it!"

So, does anyone know how to remove a track cog from a hub. I removed the lockring and tried to spin the cog off with a chain whip, but no go. It's like, totally fused. Any ideas?

Hello, I've been into biking since the early 1970s and have very fond memories of PX10s and Gitane Tour de Frances. For reasons of nostalgia I would love to get my hands on a PX 10 in a 25" frame size. The frame is the big thing. I'm well trained as a mechanic so the restoration would be fun. Can you help please?

VINTAGE LIGHTWEIGHTS:   Review of Viscount / Lambert wanted posted by: David on 2/1/00 at 3:00:04 PM
I am looking for a 1970's magazine review of the Viscount / Lambert bicycle. They made two frames, one lugged, the other fillet brazed lugless. I'm interested in the fillet brazed lugless. I am making a claim under the frame warranty and want to show that the frame was unusually high quality and comparable to much more expensive bikes, rather than other production bikes. Can anyone help me with documentation from Bicycling Magazine or some British publication.
All help wil be appreciated. I miss my poor bike, which served me well for 24 years. Please email me at dalexand@ capaccess. org (take out the spaces unless you're a spammer.)

Hello, I've got an old Peugeot 10 spd with "record du monde" on the seat tube decal. The unusual thing about the bike is that it has a disk (very much like a modern disk brake) opposite the cogs on the rear wheel.) There are no calipers on the frame, but a bracket where one could be mounted. Has anyone ever seen this? Thanks

The brand is "National" and the model is "Alpha" is has f&r fenders, a full chainguard, generator light, rear rack, and, what I found most interesting, the brakes are actuated by rods. I've searched the internet for this brand, but came up short. Please help.

I am a Schwinn fat tire guy. I ride recumbents, fat tire cruiser, and recumbents. I found a great looking bike:
Motobecame Grand Touring
888 Vitu Tubing
12 Speed, with a 6 speed freewheel with a wide range of cogs
Black, with red head tube and red stripes, gold lettering.
Down tube shifters.
Motobecane Crank and handle bars.
Very lightweigt.
But, as I look for Schwinns I now also notice old road bikes -- because of what you guys have written. I have never sold a bike on EBAY. I checked EBAY archives and they don't even list Motobecane. Does this bike have value as an old bike or did my eyes like the colors too much?????

I was a Schwinn guy for years until I switched to Raleigh as my favorite bike. In my transition I ended up with a Univega that has a nice light frame with lots of braze-ons. My poblem is I want to change to bar-end shifters. What do I do with the downtube shifter braze-ons? Where should I anchor the cable housings for the bar-end shifters? Is there a fitting for this and what is it called? It's a Suntour Cyclone non-index drivetrain that I've got here. Thanks

AGE / VALUE:   Harrison bicycles, ENGLISH, 1950's posted by: Martin on 1/18/00 at 12:41:57 PM

First of all, hello. This is my first time on the site and most enjoyable it has been! I am not a "collector" though I am a bit of a packrat. I have five different sorts of bicycle and enjoy riding them all. The next one will be an English roadster. However, the reason for my writing concerns my father. Before he and his bride escaped England in 1959 he raced bicycles, both cyclocross and track. Then, in a fit of practicality and in preparation for the serious business of starting a new family and career in the new world, he sold his bike. Recently, he has mused how nice it would be to ride his old bike again, so my brother and I have begun scratching at the surface to find more information. My father's Harrison track bike was bought new in, he thinks, 1956, in, I think, Coventry or very near by, where it was also manufactured (and ridden). He is about 5'5"-5'6" so a 49-50 cm frame (by todays standards, but bikes tend to be smaller these days, don't they). We would be very interested in and appreciative of any information leading directly to or towards this bicycle: (in order of significance, in any reasonable, ie; repairable to riding, condition) 1) A Harrison track bike 2) Any Harrison bike (on the street, at the age of 64,though fit, gears and/or brakes might be more practical, though he would never consider adding either to a proper track frame) 3) Any English track (or road racing) bicycle of the late 1950's Thank you for your consideration (and great web page), oh, and I know about e-bay. RSVP or email me, Cheers, Martin

VINTAGE LIGHTWEIGHTS:   Master link? posted by: Howard on 1/14/00 at 7:27:18 AM
I know 1971 is not vintage yet, but I'm stripping a 1971 Schwinn Varsity for parts and the confounded chain has no master link.
I can get it off, but I prefer to treat old bicycles as gently as possible. I don't work on 10-speeds very much - hardly at all - but I
was wondering if this is common practice. I've found a few kiddie bikes from the Walmart that don't have master links, but I expected
better of Schwinn. I know 10-speeds have a flexable chain, but are they a different size from the single-speed, coaster-brake bikes that I
usually work on? They look the same, but I haven't held them up to the light side by side yet. The nuts and bolts on the Schwinn derailer
don't seem to be SAE or metric. Maybe they're CWKB size. (Crescent Wrench Knuckle Busters) OK, some of them might be 8mm. That's the wrench I
couldn't find.
What's the deal on master links? Howard

Thanks for the plug, Vin! It's good to hear about your new
retail outlet, too. We at BR&K do a lot of lurking on the
Menotomy lists; it's a good way of finding what interests people.
The Ultimate Bike piece in the current issue is there because
we spotted a flurry of discussion about it in one of the lists.
Anytime we see a particularly well-composed post on the lists,
we tend to invite the poster to be a BR&K contributor.

Here's something I'm curious about: NYC bike messengers tend to
wrap their bike frames in duct tape, especially the black cloth type
of tape. Can anybody tell us why they do that? Real information would
be good; but crazy theories would be fun to hear about, also.

RE: krunk ass lowriders - I don't know what that means, but
do know Menotomy is going to be carrying lowriders again and they
they'll be under $200.

As for the messenger bikes, my top two guesses would be:

1) to disguise the actual brand of the bike so as to discourage theft

2) Uhh, Maybe I should have said I have only one guess
