I just picked up a 1980s shwinn but its a girls bike. When making a lowrider bike does it matter if it is a girl or a guys bike? If so is it worth chopping it up to make it look like a guys bike.

Well, the bibber the bike the longer the wheele bass. I'm currently working on a 26" ow-rider. However, getting the pedals in front more, does present a problem. You see you have to get a fitter to cut, measure, and move the drivetrain tube forward, and then get a welder to put it back together in a good looking way. You might even need an engineer, a mechanic, and a disighner. No stock disighn has been incorperated into the long wheele base theme, as of yet. Most low-riders are built out of some-ones garage. You might try Rott Heavy Industies at 888-Rott-123, 19400Beach Blvd. Unit 7: Huntington Beach Ca. 92648. Their hours are ( I am not affiliated ) 9:30 to7:00 P.M. Mon thru Fri., 10_6 Sat. Subject: Chain size, spandex
Entered on: Jun 11, 1999 14:29
Entered by: JimW. (wilsnetc@ix.netcom.com)

Message:
Sam, Most chains come in a sort-of-standard length. The chrome chain you can order from lowrider sources is usually the right size for a 20" frame. If you end up with too much, you can always take some links out. It's easier with a chain tool, but you can use a hammer and punch to do the job. Concerning the spandex series in BikeRod&Kustom: the next installment in the series is to do with covering a bike frame in the material. It's waiting for a stretch frame to come from ReeCycles. They recently had to move, so it wasn't possible to send it in time for issue#3. Presumably, it'll be in issue#4.

Subject: Polishing Anodized Parts
Entered on: Jun 15, 1999 00:04
Entered by: JimW. (wilsnetc@ix.netcom.com)

Message:
Rashod, The only thing I can recommend for polishing anodized parts is the sort of non-abrasive car polish used on clearcoat finishes. The anodized surface is a form of aluminum oxide, which is electrolyzed on the surface. It's fairly tough, but very thin. You can easily polish it off, with normal metal-polishing procedures. I'd say to just wax it.

Curt, There are many places to get three wheeler parts on the net. A lot of your low-rider bikes at shows are three wheelers because they cost more, can carry more, (includding your chick) and can haul more. So Co,s are R.B.R., Lovley Low Rider. Do a search, or use someone elses serch engine. You can also buy a used ice-cream rig, kind of the reverse of what your looking for with two wheeles in the front. I have found two bike motors on the web. One is from France and is outragisly priced. However, it has been in use for a long time and is tried and true. The other is out of N. Y. See the bike motor discussion area this address.

Todd, Man it takes a lot of time for my web tv to scroll down and all the way back up. Maybe I can hit back and get there faster. Kinda wish they woulk arcive all this stuff. So you want to know how to replace your washer. Can you elaberate a little more? I mean first you got the head of the bolt sticking out that coppressis the whole assembly, right? Take the universal tool,(a 10" Cresent Wreach) adjust it to size, and screw the bolt counter clockwize. Once you get it out, then the grommet retainer, grommet, and the spring housing, as well as the spring, should be in your hands. Now the trick is to putt it all back together wile fighting the tention of the spring.[I assume you allready have a new rubber grommet, I'm not a parts house!] You could get a 300 lb friend to come over, or you could use a c-clamp and an opened end wrench.{like your trusty Cresent} If anymore good questions out there, you'll have to wait, I'm tired of scrolling.

Rust is always the enemy. Modern components are nice-looking, if you order from the right source, but modern components have the thinnest-possible plating. If you put as much work into your ride as most people who do it as a creative act do, you really need to keep it indoors. If you live in a corrosive climate (seacoasts) you shouldn't even keep it in an unheated garage. Armorall will help, but for maximum beauty, stick to high-quality paste wax. Avoid Silicones, if you ever want to add to your paint scheme. As for a sound systems; unless you're the kind of person who gives the clerks at radio shack advice, you should get the components at a car-audio shop. The biggest difference is that bikes don't come with a built-in power supply. You will need a fairly heavy-duty battery to power a 100-watt, or greater, sound system. Ideal would be one of those gel-cell battery packs for electric kiddy cars. You can get one of those 12-volt batteries at ToysRUs, for about $70. It is perfect for the job. They also sell chargers for them. Or,(this is trickier) you can buy separate NiCd D-cells, and solder them in series. And then you'll need to get a charger right for the job. My advice is ToysRUs. Fitting the audio gear and making it sound good is a whole other thing; I prefer not to get into that area. Have Fun.

Message:
If you want a custom tank welded into your frame you could call auto-body shops around town, you should be able to find one that will do it for you. If you want to do it yourself it is possible, I did my frame myself. Instead of the popular welding in sheat metal I used spray insulation foam, fiberglass and bondo. I first set the frame down on its side on a sheat of plastic and sprayed the tank area with insulation spray foam. Spray in thin layes and give each layer a chance to dry. use a "cheese grater" to shape the tank the way you want it. then cover the whole area with about 3 layers of fiberglass, giving each layer a little time to dry. sand it smooth, and bondo over it to get rid of the checker board surface of the glass. After that I had a motorcycle shop paint my frame for $80. the frame looks much better than most steel frames, and its not noticably heavier

Hello underdogs of the classic bike world... I use that terms cause for the most part, this is the newest "trend" and the newest section to the collectable bike (although I've always appriciated them) but they were collecting english racers before these. My question is how many of you actually collect these machines and restore them? And how many customize? I'm not talking about painstaking restoration (although when it comes to my ballooners, PURE is the word) but just no custom jobs. I do both with the 20 inch muscle bikes, so I can understand where most are comng from. For those who collect and customize, how do you discern what bikes get THE TREATMENT, and what gets to be born once again? To me, andything that has 65% of paint on the frame goes to my imagination (just so you know, I'm not a NOS nazzi and waste these parts on these jobs)... Hope to get some responses. Thanks. Dave

Entered on: Sep 13, 1999 13:01

Message:
Hi, My name is Craig Kelchen, and I am a graphic Design student at the University of Northern Iowa. For one of my classes, I have been assigned to design a 'zine. 'Zines being defined as low-budget, special interest, limited quantity magazines. I am interested in doing a zine about old bikes, which I am very interested in. I have 2 Schwinn middleweights and an AMF middleweight from the mid '60's. I am asking for your help in this endeavor. I would like to request any stories, essays, anecdotes, etc. that you folks would be willing to submit about old bikes. Any old bikes - musclebikes, ballooners, middleweights, customs, etc. Any good material will be included in the final print. Tell us what you ride, and why. Stories about your first bikes. What you love (or hate) about old bikes. Anything that would be interesting. I will also consider putting in a few photos of bikes, provided you can e-mail me a high-resolution photo of your bike. The format for this project will probably be about 20 5.5 x 8.5 pages, so I don't have a whole lot of space for exceedingly long stories. The ideal length would be between 1-4 paragraphs for stories. I would also love to have a few 1 or 2-liners for some filler or margin material, so send any good quotes or observations. If I get enough good material, and if I enjoy doing the first, I may do a second issue, and possibly keep going beyond that. It just depends on how much good stuff I can come up with and I can get from other collectors. I would appreciate any help you can provide. Please send only stuff that you have written personally, instead of other people's stuff you have copied from forums such as this. This way I can credit the material to you, which by the way, I plan to do. So if you do send material, please include your name and city. If I use your material, I will send a copy of the 'zine to you, so also include your mailing address. If you are interested in contributing material to this 'zine, which as of now I have settled on the name "headbadge" (if you have any better ideas, please let me know), please e-mail me at: headbadge@yahoo.com Also if you have any questions direct them to the same address. Thank you very much for any help you can give me. Craig Kelchen

before i start, i am a fellow rider and collector of all bicycles:balloners, muscle bikes,middleweights,etc.. and between myself alone with 43 bikes and my fellow collector friend with over 30 bikes i have to speak up and express to many of you how sad it is to here the stories of how many of you are chopping up beautiful original bicycles. i have several custom lowriders myself with my favorite being an old huffy frame with a custom 70" chromed front end, speedo, lights, and pretty much custom or hand made everything. but the frame had already been parted out when i started. if some of you guys knew that "dad's" old crate or stingray you were hacking was worth more than the car you were driving, you would probably and hopefully think twice before hacking it to pieces! i aint bitchin', but there not exactly making these bikes anymore and those of us who seek these original pieces would be more than happy to build you a lowrider before you chop up "dad's crappy old raliegh chopper". so all i ask is for some of you to take the time to consider your actions or do some research on your new found future customs before taking action. it's just a small request from one fellow rider and collector to another. thank you all and keep the rubber side down.

I don't think anyone here is cutting up valuable bikes. Look at the lowrider magazines and you'll see some nice original early Sting-Rays, etc. Lowrider people know what's a valuable bike and what's not. I'd guess most lowrider bikes are made from nex frames (Bajitas, FNR, etc) or from old frames found in the trach (Huffy, Ross, etc). Just my opinion....

well, how many of you guys are in lowrider magazine? how many of you guys can afford to go out and buy a pre fab frame between $200.00 and $2000.00? you see jay, the average guy making a lowrider is between 10 and 20 years old. guys that make it to lowrider are usually the kind of guys who dont need to come to this page asking for advice. all i said was to the guys that do come across these classics is to please consider another alternative before making a mistake. thanks for your reply though jay and i do respect your opinion. when i get my scanner back up running, i will try to submit a picture of my prized 67' black sting ray that was stored and left in the basement four months after it was purchased until i bought it for practically nothing last year. can you say "PRICELESS!!!!" talk to ya later jay.

Just think, John, If everyone else butchered those classics to make LRBs, your '67 Stingray would be even more priceless. *-) Actually, nobody in their right mind, even a 10-year old, is going to start with a valuable collectible for a LRB or Kustom project. The usual pattern is to start with something found in the trash. My first Kustom was built in '65. I took a 20" trash Schwinn kiddie-bike frame and built the equivelent to a Stingray out of it. I had to build my own banana saddle for it. Fortunately, Western Auto Stores had ape-hanger bars by then, or I would've had to make those also.

well, if sting ray frames are what you guys want, i have several that i would be willing to part with. i also have some fenders and ape hangers left also but the handlebars would be more for someone looking for original equipment being as they have some minor scratching on all of them.the frames are straight but would have to be blasted and painted. i think i have 4 or 5 left including one 24". anyone interested let me know. i live in mn. if it means anything to ya as far as shipping goes.i also have some of the krate style narrow handle bars. might even be off of krates. im selling one of my bike collections. part of the list is on the "for sale" page under my father's name "james". anyone interested post your reply on that page. thanx.
