O.K. I asked for this discussion area, so I suppose I should post to it. I'm thinking of buying a '60s-'70s Schwinn Paramount and I'm wondering what years had the curly Nervex lugs in chrome. Was this a model specific thing or optional when you ordered a bike? Anyone out there with a 24" frame or complete bike to sell?

Picked up the following recently in decent shape - Record, Grand Prix and Super Course MK II. They have Simplex deraillers, brooks saddles and Weinmann centre pulls. I intend to fix them up and wonder if they're worth careful restoration or just fix to enjoy theride. Thanks!

Gary, I believe the way you listed your bikes was from lowest price to highest.
I believe only the Super Course had any 531 Reynolds tubing in it.

Hope this helps you decide what to do with them, but it sounds like the Super Course is the best candidate as a "keeper".
This assumes that these are all English made bikes. Raleigh of America may have used some of the same model names and I personally want nothing to do with those.

Bob, According to The Custom Bicycle, Nervex lugs were used from the 50s at least through the 70s. Not sure about the years they were cromed but I think it was a standard feature. By the way, I know of a 24" chrome P-13 from '72 thats NOS (yes, thats right) selling for $2000 if you're interested.

I've got a Olmo, late-50's or early-60's that I've restored, including the steel Campi cranks & Gran Sport derailleurs, Steel Cinelli stem & bars, etc. Only thing I can't find is the correct decals and head plate for it. does anyone know where I might locate them? BTW, it rides as great as it did when I got it about 20 years ago.

I bought this bike to race the Tour de France bac in '73 and to date it has only had about 200 miles on it.... I paid $600 + and would like to recover a good protion of that. My wife died this past year and so I'm liquidating everything and this included. It has centerpull Mafacs and Shimano of course with quick release hubs etc. and an alloy frame and so on. Nervex lugs were the standard on Paramounts at least from the early 60's to the late 70's; always chrome, except a track frame was available with unchromed lugs at a discount. All chrome bikes were available as an option.

I have a 1980 Raleigh Comp GS frame which I built up using 73 Nuovo Record parts pulled from another bike. This is in good condition and works well and draws favorable comments. The black paint and chrome looks pretty sharp when clean.
Q. By being "unoriginal' but having a better level of components, how have I affected the value?
If I sold it (no plans to do so) would it be better to split it up again?
Actually, if I found a nice Professional frame closer in age to the Campy group I'd consider robbing the parts from the Comp GS.
I'd like to here some thoughts on this kind of thing, where you have some mismatch in frame and component levels. Thanks.

The Raleigh Competition GS would have come with Nuovo Gran Sport parts. I don't think they're paticularly collectable, though people probably do. I've run across quite a few and passed. I'd say move the NR parts over to the Pro frame, it will be more desirable.

I guess we basically agree that given a choice the NR group would be better utilized on a Raleigh Professional.
My problem is that I'm riding a 25.5" frame (by todays fitting standards I would be 24.5") which in SE Pennsylvania means finding bikes in my size are few and far between.
So I'll consider this my good bike until I come across a 531 Professional frame.
My line of thought on a Comp GS being collectable is/was that its all Reynolds 531, has its Carlton label, and certainly a classic look about it.
Q. If I see any Professional for sale do I grab it? Or are there some years that are more desirable than others?
My understanding is 753 tubing would be a bit too flexabile in that large a size so I thought I would keep to the 531 or 531C tubing. Do you have any experience with this? Thanks for your help.

Heres what I know about Raleigh Pros. Probably the most desirable are the brown and gold fastback stay models circa 1970, Mark II. They were limited to a run of 500, each numbered. Prior to that the Pros I've seen have been white with wraparound stays like an International (or a Competition) The 2nd version was blue and silver, a little more chrome, then black and silver.In the late 70s they dropped the fastback stays. I don't know, but they've always seemed quite plentiful in California. I would guess about 24" was the largest frame. Keep looking, there are a lot of them out there. Ted

I don't care if they've been broken (they were both known for it, but titanium's pretty easy to have re-welded). Help! I have just aquired a beautifully stiff, streight and paint peeling Paramount. I want to ride this baby for both fun and racing

I have 2 Paramounts from the 70s. The serial number is on the dropout. I'm not looking at them, but I think the first number(s) is the month, the second two numbers are the year. I also have a 50s one, with a 4 digit number on the bottom bracket. I've been told with the older ones that they started renumbering again at the first of each year. Dating is but subtle characteristics and components. The best place for info or restoration is probably Waterford. They have the original decals, etc. Otherwise, many of the other painters/restorers can redo. One of mine was done by Brian Bayless and he does an excellent job. The frame may be entirely chrome, however, if it was originally a painted bike the metal under the chrome probably will not be polished like an original chrome bike. If its been repainted, who knows whats under there.Good luck, they're great bikes. Ted

I saw a C-8 or C-9 '72 Deluxe Twinn (yellow) at a car/bike swap meet last summer. Asking price was $120 and it finally sold on the last day. I was shocked as I thought these to be worth twice that price. I would have bought it, but I just bought a Campus Green '70 model (2-speed kickback) at a general junk swap for $85. I recently saw an ad on the 'net for a Schwinn tandem for $2500. This may have been the earlier Town & Country model (tho' that price is still too high). Did this help?

I have a bike I built from junk (already old) parts in the early 70's. Hanging around this site has piqued my curiosity - I doubt that it's collectible or restorable, but I'd like to identify and date the frame if I can, just for fun. The frame is a girl's model, one piece crank, forward-facing rear dropouts, serial # under the bottom bracket is G57877. All the frame tubes are straight, the two down tubes are parallel and connected at their midpoints by a smaller diameter tube parallel to the seat and head tubes. The frame joints at the rear dropouts look like Schwinn EF-type welds, and the head tube joints are smooth and Schwinn-like. The wheels on the bike now may or may not be original: New Departure front hub and coaster brake, 26x1.375 hooked-edge American lightweight rims/tires. The chainstays are dimpled inside to clear the tires, but even so I don't think there's room for balloon tires. Any ideas? Thanks.

I picked up most of a Schwinn a couple days ago. I've never noticed one like it and was hoping someone might tell me about it. It is labeled a S/S Tourer. Obviously better than a Le Tour but not a Paramont. Not a lugged frame but larger tubing than a Le Tour. Three piece bottom bracket with triple chain wheels, alloy handlebars, bar end shifters, Whienman (can't spell) center pull brakes, Derailiers (sp?) are steel and Schwinn marked and look very much like what I've seen on Le Tours. Most all componetents are Scwhinn labeled so I would imagine they are EOM. Oh Yea, the frameset has a Chrome Moly decal. Any comments? Thanks, Kevin

Do you have a serial number on this bike? Not sure if the S/S Tourer is an Eighties bike or not. Schwinn put out a Sports Tour in '71 (replacing the Super Sport as the #2 bike in the line). It sold for $196 (compared to $136 for the Super Sport and $350 for the Paramount). It had an ElectroForged cro-moly frame (as did the Super Sport) while the Paramount was Reynolds 531. It continued as the #2 bike through 1974 and was knocked to #3 in 1975 when the Voyageur II debuted. That year the Sports Tour listed for $209 while the Voyageur II was $335 and the Paramount was $575. Ignore all this if the bike is from the Eighties (out of my realm of knowledge).

I just purchased a 20" boys bicycle the name on it says Kent Target. Does any body know any thing about this bicycle. Tire size is 20 x 1.75. the color is red. I have never seen any thing like this one. The tires say made in Holland. Any information on this bicycle is appreciated.

It's a really nice touring frame... The tubing, by the way, is double butted. It came with Campy Nuovo Record, has Campy drop outs and fork ends. Sheldon Brown has one, and he says the lugs on his are Nervex. It's got a better fork than the Gran Jubile', but is otherwise very similar (except the Gran Jubile' doesn't have touring geometry).
Like most French bikes from the seventies, they go cheap. I payed about $60 a bit over a year ago. I'd build it up and ride it. I bent the fork on mine a few months ago and I miss it. (tip- don't throw your jacket into your front spokes- it's hard on the equipment). I replaced it with a Champion Team, which has a nice ride, but not nearly as nice as the Grand Record. I'm kind of a nut for long chainstays though.
Sheldon Brown has one, but he hasn't put any pictures of it on his site.

I've used them on a number of bikes. It depends on what you like. They're pure friction, so you won't have the ratcheting Suntours have. They tend to be a little slow shifting due to the additional cable length and take a bit of hunting around to center on the cog well. But not a big deal. Mostly, I don't ride much on the drops though, so that makes them awkward. They look nice though. I think they were released in 1949, right for many 50s and 60s bikes.

BTW a big help with bar end shifters is to use good quality lined cable housings and spray lube containing teflon to minimize friction.

any info about it. The owner said that he bought it new in 1970. It is a road
bike, Capo brand lugged frame/fork (with "Capo Seit 1930" headtube badge and
"Capo" cast in the fork crown), "Capo" decal on top tube, "Flitzer" decals on
the down tubes, "Racer" and "Das Osterreichische Marken Rad" on the seat tube,
Campy downtube shifters (steel), Campy front der. (steel), Schwinn Approved
rear der., New-Star hubs, Pietro Beretta & C. - Baranzate Milano steel rims,
Altenburger Syncron side-pull brakes and levers, Union rat-trap pedals, unknown
cottered crank (46-49), unknown 5-speed freewheel (14-22), a plastic seat
molded to look like leather (even with rivets) -- San Marco brand, "Nuova
Prode", "G L R", and "Brevettat" molded into the sides.
Any ideas? I figured that it was probably a low-end "Racer", but somebody
might be able to use some of the components in a restoration.

Lotus (not the special, limited production British Carbon Time Trail & Triathlete version) was a Japanese & later Taiwan made brand, designed by Sid Starr in New Jersey. There were models from basic to pseudo-pro. Beginning in the late 70's early 80's, this marque was a bikeshop-aimed "label" which eventually was rated a top buy by Consumers Reports mag..... not long after that, Starr sold out to SEARS (& Roebuck) and the brand lasted a few years as a feeble attempt by SEARS to sell "bike shop quality."

I need some expert advise on identifing a roadbike frame and fork.
The serial# on the bottom bracket is either J60477 or J68477.
There are no lugs, it is fillet brazed throughout. The fork crown
is forged. It has a derailleur hanger and it accepts a 26.8mm post.
The seat tube thickness is extremely thin-very light.
There were some Weinmann centerpulls that are dated 1975 on it. I know that

Bastide (bah-steed) track bikes were built in the mid thirties. Only about 700 of these were built. The bikes were very highly regarded, and many of the top six-day riders of the day rode Bastide.
I have seen two examples. The first was in Hickory, N.C. in 1973. This was a beautiful machine, well taken care of although someone had fitted it out with 26" clinchers and a 5 spd. Simplex gear.
To learn more about the bike, I contacted the late Al Toefield at Kissena Cycles on Long Island. Al told me about the marque and some of it's heritage. In Feb. of 1974, I had the opportunity to
examine the one that Mr. Toefield owned. I have no knowledge of the whereabouts of either of these two machines today.
You have found an exquisite, top line classic well worth restoring.

Recently purchased a bike marked only with "Commonwealth Cyclesport Woodbridge Virginia" decals on the forks. It has part of a Nuovo Record groupset , Suntour Superbe Brakes and Dura-Ace crank and pedals. Thought Iwould be able to put clipless on it until I noticed the pedal spindles are an unusually large diameter. I would like to know if Shimano ever made adapters for these cranksets so "normal" spindled pedals may be used. I would also like to find out more about the frame. Is that possible?

Other than the frame being an interesting lesson
at mass produced and fillet brazed for a reasonable
price...It's not worth much. I had one set up as
a five speed with a steel fork way back in the old
days. The headset had a tendency to spin loose in
the head-tube...at least on mine. You I.D. it fine,
you just need to I.D. a buyer who remembers the
Viscount ads with the bike in front of the jet and
all the hype about aerospace technology it had.

Last year I acquired a 1984 Lotus Competition for a trade worth about $50. The Lotus is full Campy NR, has dark green paint with a lot of chrome underneath (see at scratches),chrome lugs, and chrome panto fork crown. I've seen other, cheaper models of Lotus, but don't know anything about this company. Is it a quality Japanese bike, along the lines of Miyata, Fuji, etc.? Could a Japanese bike ever be collectable (hello all you Anglo- and Italo-philes)? Is it related to the aero record setting bike of the 80s? Should I scrap the frame and hang the groupo on something nicer? What are your thoughts? VH

Speaking of Italian frames, I have a story for all of you who love and adore the same. The owner of a local bike shop that is going on the auction block later this week told me the story about a month ago as we were reminiscing about the glory days of the early 70s.
Anyway, he said he sold a nice Bottechia frame to a local rider. The rider eventually crashed the bike, and brought it back to the shop for repair. The bottom tube required replacing. Upon removing the bottom tube, the local artisan noticed that it was -- gasp -- plain old SEAMED steel tubing, despite the prominant Columbus sticker on the seat tube. The shop owner gave the duped buyer another frame, and kept the faux Bottechia as a monument to our misguided faith in frame tubing stickers and Italian bicycle manufacturers.
Any similar stories? Quick, get out your flashlights and dentists mirrors and go check your Cinellis!

I have this older Gitane, it is a 531 DB tubing, including stays and forks, has campy dropouts. Seems to be a Criterium Style frame ( the BB is really high). It came with Campy NR compenents except brakes (mayfac Center pull) it has a pivo stem, no name handlebars and a pivo stem. It also had 27" steel rims on it. The brake pads had been adjusted to somewhat contact the rims.
I have purchase a Cinelli bar and stem to put on it, and I am considering a brake upgrade to campy nr. I am not rinding with the original wheels, but I pulled the ugly steels off and have replaced with a set of Mavic Sew UP rims that came off a Raliegh Profesional
How did these come configured originally, am I taking this closer or farther, Are these beasties worth anything?

I received my early 70's Raleigh Competition frame back from the blaster and, as I have never seen bare-naked Reynolds 531, I have a question or two. The blaster thought that this was an aluminum frame (this was a buddy of a buddy connection, so I didn't take the frame there myself) and blasted it in his plastic media cabinet. The bike does look that way (aluminum) at first glance. The bare metal has a flat silvery appearance (except for the brass brazing) and despite a week in my friends garage (post stripping), doesn't show any sign of flash rusting. This freaked me at first as I thought for sure that he would have put a quick coat of primer on the bare metal after the blasting. So what gives with this magic metal?

Your Mondia sounds pretty original, at least parts wise. My roomate in college circa 1972 had one: all Campagnolo, Mafac brakes, 3ttt bar and stem, Brooks pro seat, sewups. I believe Mondias were made by same company that made Allegros. May have a road test article in an old Bicycling mag if you send me your address. I hope the paint and decals are still there. I have a Rudge bicycle of uncertain vintage.
Bike appears to be late forties or early fifties
with steel deep drop handlebars, rear wheel is interesting
in that one side has a single speed freewheel while the
other side is a fixed gear (ie like track bike) forty spoke wheels.
I feel it was an inexpensive track trainer bike(?) instead of quick
release mechanism, there are large chromed wing nuts front and rear.

Well, my bike fortunes took a good and bad turn yesterday. I finally purchased a Schwinn Paramount frame (1971 -- and thanks to everyone I've bugged for pics and info over the last few months), but then discovered I have termites in my attached garage. So now my bike budget in in extreme jeopardy. I would like to build the Paramount up with the best cost/quality ratio (which means I will probably skip the Campy NR for now). Can someone tell me what the threading is for the bottom bracket, etc. and if any mid-Eighties Japanese components could be made to work. I'm talking very low budget now, so don't flame me for the sacrilege. While we're at it, apply the same questions to a '73 Raleigh Competition frame and an early '70s Motobecane Grand Record frame (both need forks by the way -- anyone got any?).

Mercier Co. made a full range of bikes and the most commen brought into the USA was a straight gauge lightweight rather like a Peugeot UO-8, i.e., with palstc, whoops! I mean Delrin Simplex and Mafacs steel cranks etc...The Merciers were really more like Gitanes, Stellas and Jeunets in that the paint was usually "flamboyant" or "candy" colors, which chipped & faded easily. The workmanship could be a bit slppy too. BUT they ride well if moderately straight and are reasonably light.//I always remember Mercier, as a Marque, that was the Sponsor of the GAN team with the one of my favorites, the perrenial Tour de France non-winner, Raymond Poulidor

Torpado was an old and excellent (IMO)marque taahat sasaly has not had much of a following or collectibilty despite their virtues. Their hey days were in the pre-WWII and just post war period..The era of Coppi & Bartali. The line was imported in the 1970's & 80's by Agrati-Garelli Corp. in South Carolina (along with Batavus,)therefore there are reasonably many of these bikes in the South Eastern USA. The top of the line models had beautifully crafyted frames with routed out dropout faces, internal rear gear cable, shaped and engraved lugs & bottom bracket shell.
The signature, Team Color was what Torpado called "Celeste" ....not the pea soup green of Bianchis, but a light turquoise-inclined pearlescent blue, more true to the meaning of celeste, i.e., "Sky Blue."
The lower priced models still had much detail work and, again, were nicer than many famous ,make "pro" bikes of that period. Unfortunately it is difficult to answer a question as to value, ' cause to many cycling afficienados the Torpado bikes have little appeal..Really old bikes that would have a historical tie (Coppi era, etc)might be an exception and find a market, but?
In the end, as with all older bikes, they are worth exactly what someone is willing to pay for them!

I have a Raleigh Pro from 1971 or so, but the lugs are ornate with heart-like cutouts and curled poiints (like profile of a curling wave), very pretty. Typical Cinelli style fork though. Is it one-off or been done before? Noticed a year stamped onto the inner face of Campy NR hub nuts (e.g. 72) - is it truly indicative of date of hub manufacture? How does one date Campy pedals? in the 50:s used them. On my bikes from
that era they are always toghether
whith an alloy handlebar with a small map
of France and the names of M. Kint and

By adjustable, I mean the horizontal part of the stem is held onto the vertical part by an integral clamp and bolt, which allows the stem to extend from about 7cm to about 14cm. Adjustable stems were common on track bikes, especially during the 20s and 30s, and Ambrosio still sold adjustable alloy racing stems as late as 1964.

I have a Titan adjustable stem on my Ideor Asso track bike, which I think dates
from sometime in the early/mid sixties (due to the 151 bcd Campy inch pitch chainrings, mainly).
I could very easily be mistaken about the age.

It has a sticker on the frame which says Inexternal Columbus Gamma Haute Resistence. Motobecane's web info guy tells me it's 4130 chromoly, 0.9MM butted to 0.6mm and back to 0.9mm. Anyone heard of a Motobecane Jubilee Sport? It has: Suntour BL derailleurs, Weinmann side-pull brakes, Nervar pedal cranks, Maillard pedals and Heliomatic freewheel, 27x1.25" wheels/tires, Gujdons Phillipe handlebar, and Fourreau Inexternal chrome fork.
