Message:
I have a bike I built from junk (already old) parts in the early 70's. Hanging around this site has piqued my curiosity - I doubt that it's collectible or restorable, but I'd like to identify and date the frame if I can, just for fun. The frame is a girl's model, one piece crank, forward-facing rear dropouts, serial # under the bottom bracket is G57877. All the frame tubes are straight, the two down tubes are parallel and connected at their midpoints by a smaller diameter tube parallel to the seat and head tubes. The frame joints at the rear dropouts look like Schwinn EF-type welds, and the head tube joints are smooth and Schwinn-like. The wheels on the bike now may or may not be original: New Departure front hub and coaster brake, 26x1.375 hooked-edge American lightweight rims/tires. The chainstays are dimpled inside to clear the tires, but even so I don't think there's room for balloon tires. Any ideas? Thanks.

The rear hub should have numbers on it like "12 71". That tells you the hub was made in December 1971. I can also guess by the yellow color that it is either late-1960's or early-70's. That was Raleigh's "psychodellic" period where they finally got away from the "black fits all" mode. Enjoy the bike. It should last you more than a lifetime if you take care of it.

The serial number you give doesn't jive with Schwinn's numbering scheme during the Krate era, which was 2 letters followed by 5 numbers. Are you sure this is correct? Maybe the bike isn't a Schwinn. You should be able to see the welding marks left from the Electro-Forging process on the chain stays (a couple of inches back from the bottom bracket).

One on the seat tube, head tube and top tube. The shifter is like a pre historic grip-shift type. On the chain gaurd decal it has the word FLEETWOOD. So as of yet I have assumed this bike to be a Sears Fleetwood. If you have any idea please email me. Thank You

Message:
Wes & Kath: Let's not get too carried away here with the wild Murray info...and congrats on same. First, the name of the company was Murray Ohio...and their main brand was Mercury...and later, Murray, not Murry. Also, they NEVER made "Columbia" (the oldest bicycle maker in the USA and certainly not a part of M-O) nor Rollfast (again an old company of proud history not involved with M-O). Also, the dates of 1950 to 1970s are in error since Murray Ohio was making bicycles under numerous names in the 1930s. Finally, M-O was NOT the only company making bicycles under the Sears name or under the "Free Spirit name.Additionally, M-O may have made SOME bicycles for K-Mart and others, but was not the ONLY supplier for these stores.

Message:
Yes, it is true that Murray was making bicycles as early as the 1930's, it is between the date 1950~1970 that MOST of the bicycles sold by these companies were made with Murray frames. But, there are exceptions. Now, the fact that I included names such as Roll-Fast and Columbia was no mistake. I happen to own a Columbia from the late 70's with a Murray frame. I also have a Murray framed Roll-Fast from about 1970. Why these names appeared on these frames is a mystery to me, but they exist. If it is any help, the Columbia is a 10-speed, while the Roll-Fast is a three speed. I am not trying to claim that all Columbias or Roll-Fasts are made by Murray, I don't even know if thes particular examples are even of the same Roll-Fast and Columbia that you know, but then again, how many Columbias and Roll-Fasts are there? Any one have any ideas?

I have one question to you, maybe you are able to help me. The problem is the identification of Swedish produced Husqvarna bicycle production year. It is ladies' bicycle painted into black with thin golden stripes. The frame no is 537729. The back wheels inner system and some other bearings production of NOVO. The wheels and tyres are old type, i.e. tyres without iron wire and with a special edges. In front chain wheel there are pattern with three H letters symmetrically. I did not find anywhere any year number (for example F&S, i.e. Fichtel & Sachs bachwheel inner systems Torpedo's has all equipped with year numbers pressed in each detail; NOVO's has not). The bicycle is probably from 1930's (surely not later than 1940). If you wish I can send you also 5 photos of the mentioned bicycle. The bicycle is still in non-restored form. Can you help me? Best wishes Valdo Praust valdo@rk.ee http://www.eif.ee/valdo/

I bought a Columbia Twosome a couple of years ago for my Dad. In trying to determine the year I used a list of Columbia numbers that I had and compared the second letter and the following numbers on the bike to the list and came up with 1966. His also began with a 'T' which I rationalized as a code for "Tandem". Whether this is true, I don't know. The components on the bike, the style of the seat covers and logos fell within this "reasoning". Using this possibly flawed logic, your bike decodes as a 1968 model. What size are the tires? Does the lettering and decals look "Sixties"?

Subject: REGARDING COLUMBIA AND ROLLFASTS by "Murry"
Entered on: Apr 7, 1998 21:39
Entered by: NBHAA (oldbicycle@aol.com)

Message:
In all due respect and response to Wes' statement that Murray made Columbias and Rollfasts...we would certainly like to see these bicycles. Murray no more made Rollfasts and Columbias than Volkswagon would have made a Pontiac! You may have something there that has either been mixed with parts, customized, or mis-identified with LOOKS similar...but they just ain't the same thing. Can't be. Toyota does not make Cadillacs. Murrays were not Columbias or Rollfasts. Murray DID make a few Schwinns in the 1980s, but even these had their own distinctive frame design and were not merely Murrays. And Rollfast bicycles were not hyphenated "Roll-Fast"...unless you have some kind of bizarre renegade private label bicycle for some small retailer who decided to use a similar name. Rollfasts were Rollfasts....Murrays were Murrays. And Columbias (usually- with a few exceptions- and they weren't Murray exceptions) were Columbias. They just didn't make things that way. Furthermore, WHO says "the majority of anything made by Murray was 1950-1970"?? Where does this statistic come from? NBHAA has records of production from Murray, Columbia, AND Rollfast... and they do not bear any of this out... If records to the contrary exist, we would like to see them.

If the Simplex derailleurs are original, you should be able to get a two digit date code from them, especially the rear. Look carefully at the metal cage for something like "71" for 1971.

I have a 1963 Schwinn Fleet Boys bike serial A331415 With 26 by 1.75 tires. This bike has one long block pedal and one short block pedal. The question is which is the correct pedal the long or short one. I also have a girls bicycle that i just purchased. This bike has no head badge and no other markings on it to tell me what kind of bicycle it is. I can not find any serial number anywhere and let me tell you I have looked. One feature on this bike is adjusting screws to adjust the tension on the rear hub. The bike is green with a light on the front fender with a rear carrier painted the same color as the bike . The tire size is 26 by 2.125. I pulled this bike out of a local junk yard. It was buried under a lot of old water heaters. I feel proud of myself for saving this bike and am going to restore it myself. Please Help!

I just bought a light blue Columbia Tandem bicycle. It looks about 20-30 years old, but I am just guessing. A label on the bike reads "Centennial Edition." Does anyone know when Mr. Columbia built his first bike? And does this bike have any value? It is a five speed with a cable operated coaster brake. Wierd? Or typical for a tandem? Any info would be *most* appreicated! :-) By the way, this is a great list! Love the letters!

It is easier to determine dates if you include tire sizes. The tire's size is written right on the tire. Just read it and write it here. It will be "26 x 1.175" or "20 x 2.125" or whatever. That helps a lot in figuring out a bike's age.

I was wondering if i have what I think I have. I found a bike that to my knowledge seems to resemble a schwinn moto bike , but I am not sure. the bottom bracket has the number 6336M stamped on it. Which seeems to me the last two digits could be the year? Too simple? Also the rear hub is an Eclipse brand from New York , and there is also the number 36 stamped on it too. I was wondering also that if it is a motobike , is it worth restoring the right way or should I get it rolling and make it my barhopping bike. It is missing the tank, struts, and fenders , so alot is gone. Are those items long gone as far as finding replacements. Also what tires were ran on these and are they still available. I would really appreciate any info on this . This is my first old bike and my first resto. project on a bike. I love it so far. The way these old bikes were built is awesome for lack of a better word. thanks again!!!

I don't know anything about old bikes...have just aquired a very rusty blue "Rollfast"...can anyone tell me anything about it? I've looked at the pictures on this site and it's fairly similar to them, but not exactly. It has 26x1-3/4 tires, but they seem a little small for the fenders, so I don't know if they're original or not. It doesn't seem to have any sort of serial #, but has a label on the front that says "Tulane" and the name of the store where it was purchased. Most importantly (this will seem dumb), I can't seem to figure out how to remove the chain to soak it (very rusty). it doesn't seem to have a master link and i can't see any way to get it over the frame. Any help would be appreciated.

I bought a girl's English 3-speed this past weekend (garage sale find); the bicycle says Marfield, made in England in a couple of places and there is a coat of arms sticker on the frame (head tube?)just below the handlebars that says English lightweight. The chainguard has Joannou on it, the tires are Dunlop 26"X 1 3/8" (badly cracked), and the seat is a white leather Brooks. On top of the handlebar stem right above where the handlebar passes through, there is a stamped "R" with some sort of design below it (I can't tell what the design is supposed to be). The rubber on the brake calipers say John Bull. The bike itself is black; the fenders both have a centerline ridge, the front fender ending with a small small chrome capped "fin". I doubt that it's super valuable but I think it's pretty cool. I would like to do some restoration (which won't take much, it's in pretty good shape) and find out a little about its age and background. No one I've asked has ever heard of Marfield and none of the books I've checked mentions it. I would appreciate any information anyone can provide. Thanks.

Can you help me with identifying this bike? I'd like to either restore it or just return it to riding condition, depending on its historical value. Thanks! Joshua

Can anyone tell me if this is worth anything? If so where can I find some information on it. I tryed to contact Sears about it but was unsuccessful in getting any info. Right now it sits in the rafters of my garage collecting dust. I have never seem or heard of this in my life time and was wondering if there was many of these in production in there time. I just picked up a bike at a garage sale and was doing some research and came across this website. I am a bicycle newbie so I hope someone can please email me as to what year/make/price this bike is? Thanks in advance. Purple Western Flyer Buzz Bike-it has a red/yellow/green sticker on the front of the neck that says "Western Flyer/Western Auto Stores" on it. The bike has white triangular refectors on the sides of the forks. It has Western Flyer purple sparkle hand grips on "ape-hanging handlebars?". On the frame, below the seat, it has a gold sticker that says "AMF" and the number "2760-A17" on it. Molded into the frame metal on the outside-rear-left behind the brake clamp is the number "P548542". It has a "Western Flyer - The Tough One", 20x1.75, 50 PSI front tire on a spoke rim and a Kenda, 20x2.125, 40 PSI rear tire on a spoke rim (not original?). It has front and rear fenders that are the same color as the frame with 3 white stripes going down each fender. It also has a "WF" and the words "Buzz Bike" in white on the chain guard. It has a banana seat with a sissy-bar going up to the back of the seat, but not beyond. I do not know how to tell you anything about the pedals, chains, gearing on the rear wheel rim as I do not know what to look for. I hope some of my terminology is correct, based on what I have learned on the web site. Thanks!!! Jeff.
