MISC:   Splitting out Musclebike and Hi-wheeler posted by: Menotoym Vintage Bicycles - OldRoads.com on 4/22/00 at 8:58:56 AM
We're in the process of splitting out Musclebike and Hi-Wheeler topics from the Balloon tire and Middleweight topics.

This will help keep topics more organized and is also one of the steps we're taking to improve performance.

BALLOON:   What have I got here? posted by: Ben on 4/20/00 at 1:38:52 PM
I recently aquired a rough old 24" balloon tire bike and I need some help identifying it. I have a hunch that it was made by Schwinn, but I am not sure. It has New Departure front and rear hubs. It has double top tubes...the top one is arched and the bottom is perfectly straight. The serial number is C12629 56, and it is located under the bottom bracket. The 56 in the serial number almost looks like it was stamped seperately from the rest of the serial number. The bike also has mounting brackets for the rear fenders (I think this is common with Schwinns.) Any ideas as to what I have here? Any help would be apprecaited.

BALLOON:   Western Flyer X-53 posted by: Mike on 4/16/00 at 2:54:19 PM
I have a boys Western Flyer bike that I rode as a child in the 50's. The bike had been stored at my parents place all these years. I painted the bike when I was a kid and now I would like to restore it to the original color scheme. The problem is that I can't remember how it was painted. I do remember that it was red and black with a lot of chrome. The serial number is 171156. I assume the bike is a 1956 model since that was about the time I got it. Can anyone tell me where I can find the details for this bike? Also, when I was a kid I changed the spring action front fork and fender to a standard fork so I am looking for the correct fork for this bike.

AGE / VALUE:   Eatonia Glider??? posted by: David Bilenkey on 4/16/00 at 2:09:44 PM
Yesterday was our spring police auction. I picked up a few neat things, but one requires some detective work.
It's headbadge says "Eatonia Glider" and below: "The T. Eaton Co, Canada" So it's a depertment store bike! ;-) It's a one speed coster balloon type.
A ladie's frame. It's been repainted sloppily a couple of times but seems to have originally been a mettalic blue. The headbadge is all that remains of the original markings, but component-wise it has:

Brampton cottered steel cranks
A Perry B-100 coaster brake rear hub (39-14 stammped into the shell)
The rims are British F type steel chromed 36 hole (badly rusted and painted with silver paint)
The rear tire is a white walled Continental 28 x 1.75 (both tires are to be replaced)
I'm about to start stripping it down and giving it a new life but some history first would be great.

Any help in determining the age of this bike would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

David

MIDDLEWEIGHT:   Schwinn Typhoon age? posted by: Jim Wallace on 4/15/00 at 6:46:40 AM
I'm trying to determine the age of my recent acquisition. I have found the web pages showing serial numbers vs. year, but can't locate the serial number on the bike itself. I've looked all over (well, not quite I guess...)
Question #2: Can you still get the decals? I want to repaint it - I have read why I should not, but the paint is really rough. And what does one do about the white rims? I don't want to scrub the white off while trying to take off the rust.
Thanks,

Yesterday I made a heck of a score (I think). Three pre-war frames.
1: 1931 Hawthorne Flyer
2: early to mid thirties Monark
3: early forties Schwinn B-6 W/ locking springer forks and front drum brake.
These frames are pretty rusty and crusty but I can salvage them. I got them for a pretty good price. I guess I now have enough projects to keep me busy for a couple of years!
I am SOOOO stoked! I just had to spout off to someone about them. Like i said they need a He!! of a lot of work and T.L.C. but I just couldn't pass them up!
Thanks for listening,

Just curious how much my regular riding bike is worth. It's a red & white 1950 Schwinn DX straight-bar. It has a tank, feather chainguard, rack, pinstriped fenders, and a Rocket Ray. On the handlebars are two "Safety Mirrors", an American Flag bell, red & white streamers, and a "Cadet" speedometer. There are red "Tingley" mud flaps, Schwinn red jewel hub caps, and a set of red & white "Wacky Wheels". "Red Dice" valve cap covers, leather saddle, and large leather saddlebags. There is a rear taillight with "Make-a-Lite" generator. There are also ELGIN skirt guards I had custom painted and fit to match the Schwinn perfectly. The whole entire bicycle and every single accessory is in mint condition, and the bike itself wears the original red & white paint. Thanks.

I have an old curved bar (not cantilever) Coast king frame with tank and chaingaurd. The paint is mostly gone but I can almost make out the name on the chaingaurd. It says 'SkyWay" or something like that. The tank has a picture of an old military style airplane on it. Someone sugested it may be late forties, but I am inclined to think it is early fifties. I am fixing this old cruiser for a friend of mine can anyone give any info on this diamond in the rough?
I do appreciate your help.

MIDDLEWEIGHT:   1956 Schwinn Mystry Bike posted by: Mike Benno on 3/31/00 at 7:13:58 AM
Hi:
I am trying to identify my old cruiser bike. I have been able to date it (Serial number 7F08396). I'll give you some of the features. The frame style has seat stays that go to the head tube (cantilever?). Mono top tube. The frame and fenders are red with two white pin stripes and white tips on the fenders. There is a multi-colored (blue and rust) checkered pattern panel on the seat tube. Front caliper brake, rear coaster brake on a huge Bendix single speed hub. 26x1 3/4 wheels (S7). No chain guard. One interesting feature, the rear fender is 3/4 length.

Any help would be appreciated. Would this be considered a balloon tire or middleweight?

Is anyone interested in a 1957 Columbia Fire Arrow frame, bars, rims, and seat for sale? The frame was painted professionally a few years back, but the paint is still lusterous, new handlebars, a pair of N.O.S. multi-colored streamers, a recovered original red seat with chrome guardrail, new bugle horn, an N.O.S. round mirror. The bike has it's original 26" x 1.75" rims (need to be rechromed along with the sprocket and stem). Has red dice valve caps. The bike comes with a non-working, but very cool looking battery headlight with a PROPELLER drilled into the middle from the 50's, and a rear taillight for a generator hookup. $55.00 or best offer plus $25.00 shipping & handling ($80.00 total). ALSO-a mint condition Schwinn Krate speedometer. This is very cherry. The glass is 100% clear and free of scratches, superb cable, and the needle does'nt even wobble, and the chrome shines like new! Only thing is it has a broken driver bracket (but the odometer, and driver are 100% accurate!). $25.00 plus $5.00 shipping & handling ($30.00 total). Thanks, and email if interested-no waiting!

I just picked up what I thought was a Schwinn Twinn tandem bike. It's been repainted, though, and I noticed on the chain guard the words COLUMBIA TWOSOME raised slightly (decal underneath). The entire bike, including chainguard, is almost identical to many Schwinn Twinn single speeds from the mid to late 60's. Can anyone tell me the relationship between Columbia and Schwinn? Did Schwinn supply components to Columbia? Is this most likely a "mix 'n' match" bicycle? (The front forks are the common Schwinn "blade" style, and every part has the same color paint underneath the respray job.)

I also cannot find a serial number anywhere on the frame. Is there a special place to look?

Finally, does anyone know how to remove the spray can paint job without damage to the underlying decals?

Thanks in advance,

Brian

I have a bike whose headbadge says "Coast King" it has a crown on the front which I noticed my Monarch, which is for sale(look further down this page),also has . Was this bike made by Monarch and sold by Coast-to-Coast stores? If so, is it worth anything? It's a 24" ballooner which is in great shape but it has 7 different layers of paint .

Saw a very old Sterling Bicycle today. Namebadge says made in Kenosha Wisconsin, patented Sept 10, 1895, Jan 12, 1897, other patents applied for. Bike has wooden rims, cork grips, troxel seat. Lightweight style frame. Frame is very solid, only surface rust. Seat is in pretty good shape, good leather, no rips. Grips aren't too bad. Front wheel is very nice, good wood, not warped still has some finish left to it. Rear rim is warped, but all there. Couldn't find any other age or serial number markings. Owner is curious as to value and so am I.

I recently bought a green cruiser style bike. It has schwinn handgrips and aftermarket tires which say 'fits schwinn st'. but otherwise no indication of what brand it is. There is some white on the front fork. The serial number is upside down and may be partly rubbed off, and all I can make out is '99b26'.

Any idea what kind of bike this is?

BALLOON:   Firestone Deluxe Cruiser posted by: Matt on 3/13/00 at 6:01:21 PM
Just found a Firestone Deluxe Cruiser, (monark). Just like a Monark Super Deluxe without the spring fork. Has the pedestal light rather than the train light. Has nice rear rack with chrome louvers. Rims are drop center and the tires currently on it are Firestone ww that say 26X1.75 and then "will mount on 26X2.125 rims" on the tire. All complete except for the top of the light (available as repop from M.L.) I'm just wondering if this was originally a balloon tire beast or was really a middleweight? I can't tell from the rims or the fenders although the fenders do look a little narrow to be balloon. Fenders are painted with pinstripes, full wrap style, rear has a the nice chrome reflector trim around the rectangular stimsonite reflector. This bike is pretty rough paint wise, but all there and very very solid. All surface rust and fade. Chrome work will be needed of course, but not too bad. Please advise on the tire/size issue and give me a rough idea what I should offer the guy for it. He's talking $100.00 but I want to be sure it's a ballooner rather than middleweight before I committ. Thanks, Matt.

I have what I believe is an unusual old bike, but maybe not.
It's a Dayton (Huffman Mfg. Co.) Bike and is painted dark
green with no chrome any where except the bar attached to
the back of the seat. The pedals have wooden blocks instead
of rubber. It has a leather Troxel seat. The rear hub is made
by Morrow. The Serial number reads H1597243 1944. The bike
was purchase from a Government auction. This old bike for it's
age is in good condition and rides great. I think the only item
missing is the rear stand and fender clip. It also has a round
brass ID tag attached to the rear fender. Is this collectable
and worth restoring? Thanks

I've got a Ladie's Schwinn serial # N64918. Based on the Scwinn chart, it must be a 1956 model year. It was originally dark green and cream/white, 3 speed with coaster brake. The lower front end of the chain guard ends with a circular decal area. I think I'm missing the front fender.

Can't read the stickers; I painted the bike pink (with household paint, yuck) when I was in college. Like an idiot, I replaced the wheels and removed the headlight when I brought it over to the Orient for a year.

I can't seem to figure out what the actual model name is, maybe Starlette or Hollywood? But the year/color scheme/chain guard scheme is confusing me.

Does anyone know what it is?

Is it worth restoring? Or better to sell?

Thanks you guys!

- Built in horns

Hello I bought a girls Hiawatha ballon tire bike this weekend and am curious if any serial # list are available to determine the exact age of the bike? I believe its a late forties model. The bike has a skip tooth drivetrain & a New Departure model D hub. The bike is 90% there with what I believe are the original tires (Crest Deluxe tires & tubes). The chain guard says St. Croix on it. I have done the usual search of classic bike web pages and notice there are few Hiawatha bikes featured anywhere. The original condition of the bike and the fact that it has a tank and truss rods is what sold me, the headlight is missing and maybe a rear rack but am unsure. Thanks for any info at all.

I already have a buyer so I guess there won't be a conflict of interest here so you guys can tell me some more info on it or what its worth, I just want to know. The price is settled and it isn't changing so it isn't gonna affect anything, but I would just like to know, here is the message I posted before I sold it:

I have an old black phantom that I am going to sell but I need to get a little info on it, it is red and black right now but that is because someone used house paint on it to turn it red and sanded most of the old paint off (but when I started to strip the old red house paint off in a few areas you can see black paint, which is why I know it is a black phantom and not another type of phantom, here are pictures of it
http://www.geocities.com/gabovolvo/bike
the serial number is C57276
here are some features
s2 wheels, bendix drum brake (and it still works!!), steering lock (but someone jammed it)
here is what is not original
fenders, grips, the chain sprocket, the rear carrier rack thing (I have one that came with it but I don't think its the right one), seat, and I have a feeling that the chainguard might not be original since when I was stripping it it was a different color from what was under the paint rest of the bike and it looks like someone cut it to fit it, and I think the old guy who I bought it from said that he replaced it but I'm not sure about that. As for the other stuff, i don't know, I have the brake lever for the bendix brakes but I had misplaced it at the time those pictures were taken but I found it and put it back on now, but it needs a new cable. the front fork is original, I'm not sure about the spring though, spring needs replacement or needs to be rechromed anyway, it works great though. One of the truss rods on the front fork looks like someone welded it up (I'd assume because it broke or something) The tank doesnt have any big dents in it but the inside is a bit rusty, but the chorome on the outside is in real nice shape. if you have any questions or need more info just email me or reply. I am going to be looking to sell this bike soon. One other thing, I remember the guy telling me that it was a 1952 black phantom when I bought it from him, I was looking for an old frame to chop up an make a lowrider bike out of (I'm into cars now, don't have to worry about me butchering any bikes, and its muscle cars not lowriders that I'm into) and I was asking him if he had heard about the new (at the time) repro's of the 1952 Schwinn Black Phantom, he kinda smiled and pointed at the bike he had been riding, when I started talking to the guy it was because I had seen him on that bike and I thought that would be a great bike to turn into a lowrider (I was very stupid). so when I left I left with that bike. Anyway enough babbling, thanx
-Gabo
PS what might I expect to get for this bike in its current shape, it rides awsome, but it could use some work in the looks dept.

Ayway enough babling, thanx
-Gabo
PS what might I expect to get for this bike in its current shape, it rides awsome, but it could use some work in the looks dept.

AGE / VALUE:   Lets play "Name that wheel"" posted by: ChristopherRobin@starmail.com on 2/14/00 at 4:59:00 PM
I spent the day looking thru everything and I pulled out a old white enamel painted wheel size 26 X 2.125 a wards tire. old, possibly prewar, New Departure front hub blacked out, Whay does this rim have no markings on it? I am not so sharp when it comes to Baloon tire, but I grabed it for 15.00. I haggled him down to 12.00 but then he distracted me and only gave me back a five for my 20.00 so it was 15.00 in the end. There is another 26 X 2.125 wheel,( front) if it is not a Schwinn rim with the double knurling I get lost. Should I grab it up for 15.00 or let it go to scrap? It is a strange pattern not Schwinn, Where can I find information telling what wheel goes on what bike? Anyway, I liked the wheel even if it is entirely useless to me.I never had anyone with me on these trips and if I did, we would be competing for the goodies we find, so I go alone and I look at all this stuff and I only have 62% brain so I go back and back over again working it over. I do not like to buy whole truckloads and have to dispose of the junk stuff.

Ok....
Some balloon tire bicycles are priced in the Stratosphere. You need to take out a mortgage to buy Sting-Ray Krate. You need a 6 figure income to purchase a high-wheel bike. So where's the next trend? I want to get in early this time so I can make a few bucks to spend on the bikes I really like.

From the serial number I have discovered that it is a 1959 model (E914810). However I'm not sure of the model. It is all black with black fenders with white pinstripes. It seems to be a two speed kickback with coaster brake. No other bells and whistles, pretty plain jane. No name on the black with chrome chainguard... though this could be a later addition, or painted over. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Matt

I recently inherited a man's bike with wooden rims about 25.5"
in diameter. It has unusual "braced" handle bars (I saw an old Indian
with these handle bars) and a New Departure rear axle and coaster
brake. It is a fairly simple straight frame. I cannot find any names or numbers on the frame or components
anywhere.. except for the leather seat (well sprung) that says "Traxler" or
"Troxler" on it. I can e-mail photos.. Does anyone have
any idea of the manufacturer ? Iam interested in any data or
redtoration info. Thanks, John "jbucking@richnet.net".

I have recently purchased an Elgin frame. I'm not exactly sure which model but I believe it may be a twin 20 or the deluxe, (according to photos in the history of the bicycle books).
This is the model with no center/ seat post. Unfortunately I haven't been able to find out much more than that. I do not believe the fenders to be original, although they may be. The fenders are chrome "peaked" type fenders. This frame is a little rough but very salvageable.
If anyone can supply any info, history, and ESPECIALY PIC.s; I would be most grateful.
This frame is just way cool, I love it!!!! Very unique...

I have looked on a few websites from time to time trying to locate a good source for parts for my '66 Sting Ray Fast Back. I need tires, a new rear fender and possibly fender stays for front and rear,

I am hoping to avoid getting new rims but that may also be a need. I am looking to restore for riding purposes but I do want to stay as original as possible. The seat, frame and crank are all good. The derailleur probably also needs to be replaced.

My pride and joy stayed in my parent's attic from about 1972 until 1997. A little rust and dust but otherwise everything was there.

MISC:   They're out there! posted by: Hidden Treasures on 1/19/00 at 5:35:53 AM
In an old issue of the Bicycle Trader I found an article
which talks about on bicycle collector's discovery:

...A cache of early bicycles found in the cellar of a
Pawtucket, RI home. Auctioneer Micheal Fallon explained
the he received a phone call from an antique dealer in
Rhode Island. After a brief phone conversation he sent
photos of what appeared to be some highwheels and
hard tire safeties. The photos were enticing enough to
lure Fallon to Pawtucket, however, they did not prepare
him for the treasures encountered during the visit.

The collection was assembled during the Depression by
William Fortin, a plumber by trade who took unusual
bicycles as payment from families who were unable to
pay their bills. It was a good deal for both parties
involved.

Mr. Fortin seemed to collect just about everything,
including a cigar store Indian Princess, which the
Copake Auction sold earlier this year. Mr. Fortin's sons,
Bill and Richard, recalled their father as saying that
he never sold a bike if it was rare and original. He
did however, trade off and sell "the common stuff".

Fallon was stunned by the variety and unrestored condition
of the bicycles in that basement - the photos showed common
highwheels, but the cellar contained rarities such as a
very rare Bronco style pneumatic rear wheel gear driven
cycle, a previously unknown tricycle boneshaker and a very
rare and desirable youth size Elliot hickory wooden bicycle.
"This was a once-in-a-lifetime find!" exclaimed Fallon.

I picked up a Monarc Thunderbird yesterday. I doubt that it's a high-demand bicycle, but I'd sell it cheap. I have no interest in restoring it.
My guess is it is from about 1960, blue, with rusted handlebars and mismatched pedals. It has a carrier and a good chain guard, tank, coaster brake and 26 inch wheels. The bad news is that it's a girls frame.
Don't blame me, ladies, I don't make the rules. It needs a seat and I think I have one that will work. I could even replace the pedals. Anybody interested in a bike like that? It's in Tennessee.

BALLOON:   Colombia posted by: Marc Ament on 1/11/00 at 3:39:09 PM

Hello,
Well I'm stumped. I bought a used fat tire bike from a local bike dealer. It most closely resembles or I should say has a Fire Arrow style gas tank on it. When i look at the picture of the 3 Star Deluxe it has the tail or fins of that bike. Yet it differs from these models in its chainguard and crank spoke pattern. The area inside the pedal cranks has a snowflake design. There are five spokes and at the edges where the star points reach the chainwheel teeth there is a punched out triangle. It gives the pedal crank area a snowflake look. The chainguard had an odd bullet shaped conical point on the top front half and resembles the firearrow 59 picture the rest of the way.
I was watching a special on the X-1 and as Neil Armstrong was walking along I saw The exact bike leaning against the hanger. The guy who sold it to me said it was a 45. Did Colombia make this style of bike in the war years? Also
where is the serial number located. I have to be careful looking for it as it is swathed with a thick second coating of paint. The only other thing i noticed is it has a Bendix Rear Hub. Any info appreciated.

ok, so i'm stumped but at least on the right track. j. pridmore's book Schwinn Bicycles is the closest i've come to identifying this bike. from an old ad from the '20's it appears to be a womans model 103 henderson or model 105 schwinn. except head tube has aluminum plate that says Chicago Tribune Special. i've got lots of pics, just need to figure out how to send them. oldest city license plate of the bike says 1940. has two new tires, never mounted and still in package tape dated feb. 15, 1942. no weathering or cracks or anything! serial number on bottom bracket is #569702 A....maybe that will help.

AGE / VALUE:   Pedal Crank Question - HELP! posted by: Gordon on 1/10/00 at 9:03:52 AM
I have some NOS Schwinn cranks, but the packages have been handled a lot and are hard to read. Some appear to say "20 inch w/24T" and some "20 inch w/88". Comparing the 2, they look identical. Can someone shed some light on this for me? Also, on the crank itself it says "SA" and some numbers that look like a date. I assume this is date of manufacture (?), but what does "SA" stand for? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

AGE / VALUE:   Crown Bicycle posted by: Ken on 1/8/00 at 10:23:47 PM
Greetings! I recently found a bike. It is a Crown made by Great Western Mfg in Laporte Indiana (Ser # 1 2916). It is a men's model bike with metal clad wooden rims wire spokes and a Morrow coaster brake. The top tube is curved. The handlebars go straight back and have a brace. The front fork has a truss. A little of the pinstriping is remaining. The kickstand is in the rear. The pedals, grips, tires and seat cover are missing.
I would like to know more about the bike and the company, including dates of manufacture and potential value of the bike.
Any assistance about a source for tires, style of rear reflector (if any), grips, seat cover, pinstriping, and pedals would be most helpful. Many thanks ..Ken

AGE / VALUE:   Bamberger Co. Tandem Bicycle posted by: Dave on 1/6/00 at 5:43:29 PM
A local furniture auction in my town has a tandem bicycle built by the Bamberger Co. coming up for auction. Has anybody heard of this company and if so when were they in business. I saw a picture of the bicycle and it looked pretty old (maybe 40s or 50s). I am new to the vintage bicycle hobby, but my wife and I have a Schwinn tandem and enjoy it very much. I would like to pick up another tandem but have no idea of fair value. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also, is there any sort of vintage bicycle blue book? It's difficult to buy bicycles when you have no clue as to how much you should pay.

MISC:   what is it??? posted by: Rif Addams on 1/4/00 at 9:05:37 PM
I recently aquired a partial bike. I am trying to find any information on it. A name or manufacturer would be a nice start. :-}
Whats left of the sticker on the head tube reads 'Ewans' or 'Evans Products Plymouth, Mass.' It is a cantilever frame with foward facing dropouts, chrome peaked fenders. It is black and white the white being on the head tube and coming to a peak just rearward of the hear tube.
I wish I could describe the crank/sproket assy. it is very groovy but I don't know how to describe it. The forks have the u-shaped slots for the wheels. It has a bendix red band 2 single speed coaster brake hub with a single red band around it. this was used from '64 to '70 (?)
it has the rear wheel only but the size is: 26" X 1.750"
Can anyone help me know what this bike is? PLEASE, I'm losing sleep trying to find out what it is...
Thanks for your time,
Rif Addams

Can anyone help me determine the value of a bike I have. It's
a 26" Women's Shelby Flyer. It has silver/chrome fenders, and has
the original red & blue paint. it has a headlight built into the
tank, with a button on the side of the tank. It also has a rear light
attached to the rear fender. The tires are 26 x 2.125
and is pretty good condition, except a little rust. The serial # on the
bottom reads "T 758489" It has a basket on the front, and 2 kickstands,
one of which is the type attached to the back fender that loops around
the rear tire. I am looking to sell it if anyone is interested. I live
in the Philadelphia area, and would consider all offers.

up your web site.

If you consider yourself an expert on a particular bicycle,

I bought a girls bike a few years ago that I cannot find info on. Brass plate says "STUTZ" for model and that it was built by Guarantee Bicycle Co. in St. Louis. Plate also has 3 addresses on it : 1164 N Kings Highway, 6139 Delmar, and 3606 Natural Bridge. Anyone with info on this bike and possible worth? Handles have been spray painted. Can ride, but not in prime shape..I think it needs bearings. Thanks.
