Is there a VIN decode for Monark bikes some where, like the Schwinn? I have a mens balloon bike VIN C6103036052 it is red and says "Sportster" on the top bar. I also bought a womans "Rocket" VIN A1549204. It is blue w/tank, light, and truss. I would like to learn more on Monark bikes, years, styles, etc. Where do I look? Help! |
We've just added a new item to the "Resources" section of this site (oldroads.com). It's meant to answer Sting-Ray questions like: "Did Schwinn make a 2-speed Coppertone Super DeLuxe in 1967?" Check it out! -Vin |
What do you guys think of my restored Rollfast Coca-cola bike? You can see it on this site in the pic archives under Rollfast or 1949. Yes this was a REAL coke bike when found in the woods under a rotten tarp that seemed to save many of the factory parts. nearly a year later and lots of time and work its back to its self agen. Restoration was done useing mainly NOS parts and a VERY nice pair of repop rims but the sprocket, h-bars, tank, rack, seat post, and fork are all factory. Take a look at the pc and let me know what you think. Thanks, Joe |
I have several NOS Morrow brake arms -anybody interested? They are finished in chrome with not a scratch to be seen. Does anyone know where I can get parts for the new departure WD hub brake. Thanks , Stephen Thorpe |

Has the Lshaped seatpost.Black vinyl covered leatherlook seat. |

I have a Monark rocket that I am restoring, and my question is: were all monark rockets equipped and sold with a tank and rear carrier? Any input on these questions or infor- mation on this make and model of bicycle will be appreciated. |
Anyone out there know anything or have any ideas of where I might go to find out what this horn is I have? It's built similar to a klaxon ,but it is torpedo shaped, mounts to the h'bars,it has a fancy cut out design on the face and has a plunger mechanical system like the klaxon. It's so loud; I mashed the plunger and my cat has been gone for a long time now.Ha! Thanks ,Stephen T |
At last someone got into the archives and wrote a book! In celebration of Goodyear tire's first 100 years, author Jeffery Rodengen has compiled "THE LEGEND OF GOODYEAR: THE FIRST 100 YEARS,which is, as the name promises,a history of the company. Using the company's archives to harvest art and interviews with executives, customers, and racing legends, the book spreads out over 256 pages and features over 350 photos. If your bookstore doesn't have the $39.95 book, contact Write Stuff Syndicate, Dept.CC, 1515 SE 4th Ave.,Fort Lauderdale, FL 33316, 800/900-2665. ** ( I hope to see something mentioned about bicycle tires!)** |
That apostrophy on the address is supposed to be a tilde ( squigly thing. ) I guess it doesn't translate on the post. |
I have seen the photos on this and some other sites of a 1959 Panther II but nowhere have I seen any info on a 1959 Panther III. Can any one help. Mine is similar to the one pictured here at Old Roads except that I have chrome fenders. I have a picture at http://www.concentric.net/'rrrrguy/bike2.html The whole thing is covered in dark green paint but I would like to restore it. I am assuming it takes the quarter tank like the one on this site at http://oldroads.com/pqdb_img.asp?p=http://members.aol.com/menotomy2/disp/pan1.gif&mod=Panther_II&mak=Schwinn or http://members.aol.com/menotomy2/disp/pan1.gif Thanks! All help is appreciated. |
I just picked up a balloon tire Shelby Flyer (womens). Red with silver splash guards. It has a front headlight, with a button on the side of the front casing, and a rear light with a switch. All parts are intact, but the chrome is a little rusty. Does anyone have information about this bike. It's age? It's worth? Thanks! |
This bicycle was sold in Minn. It is in pretty good shape. The chrome is still in good shape, and the bike looks and rides good. It says vista on the handle grips, and the back of the seat, the 5spd shifter is mounted between your legs.I need info on this bike please! |
You'll find it on the home page (oldroads.com) |
Ok guys and gals anyone who knows this one will win a trip to ..........just kidding! I have a 26" balloon tire (schwinn)? or something-(the head tag is missing)All the other parts are schwinn though. It does not have a fixed kickstand like the other schwinns I have observed. Ok maybe having a whizzer engine has something to do with it because being a motorbike it has a drop stand. Was this something done only to dx's ,or could it be just part of the motorbike package? Or is it some other bike? These are some questions that have been destroying my mind. Help I'm an amature and I'm going crazy over this. Thanks Y'all, Stephen |

Hey, I recently scored a ton of 60's era bicyle gear. I have slicks (7 Unioyal "fastrak" 20x1.75 for s-7, 7 Schwinn fastback Sliks 24x1 3/8 for s-5 or s-6) These tires are NEW! Also many Bendix two speed kick-back hubs (red, yellow, and blue), Hurcules 5 speed hub, many Sturmey Archer rear hubs (three speeds and coaster), New Departure coasters, Scwinn stingray banana seats, many lights, bells and horns. Etc., Etc.... This was the score of a life time but it is taking up all of my space. I'd like to do some weeding out. Let me know if you seek specific items and we can talk about it . I also have an assortment of stick shifts (Shwinn, Sturmey archer 5-speed,etc.)!!! Thanks. |

I have an old Arnold Schwinn bicycle that I would like to find out the year, approx. value and any other info I can find out about this model. The bike is still ridable but is not in great shape. I have pictures if needed. Still has brass nameplate on gooseneck. Can anyone help or know where to go to get info. Thanks for any help. |
I recently aquired this bike, it's in fair condition all original, some rust, etc. Should I restore it or sell it as is? what is it worth? The guy who gave it to me was about to junk it! I couldn't stand to see it go that way. the bike still looked alright, it just needed some help. I saw one recently on the net that was very nice, mine is in considerably poorer condition but still nice. Can anyone help? |
Monarchman, Thank you for the info. Now I need to know how old the bike is. Serial# A1741618. Is there a website that has info on Firestone/Monarh bikes? |

I know that some musclebikes have a skinny tire on the front and a fat slik on the back, but I don't know if they have different front and back rims. Can anyone help me out?? |

I saw this topic on the schwinn page and figured I'd bring it up here, too. Sting-Rays and Krates are like beanie babies. There are lots of 'em around and the prices are way too high for such common bikes. There's a guy on the web who's been putting up wanted ads for 16x20* bikes for a couple years now. I'll bet he's got a nice collection built up. If you went to a bike show and there were 2 booths next to each other, each booth with 5 16x20 muscle bikes, which booth would you go to? The one with 5 krates, each a different color? Or the booth with a Krate, a Chopper, a Screamer, a.. (I can't think of 2 more 16x20s right now...) * a 16x20 bike is a muscle bike with a 16" front wheel and 20" rear wheel, for example a Krate or Raleigh Chopper or a Sears Screamer - check the picture database for examples |

I have recently aquired an older Hercules bicycle that judging by the archives should be a ballon wheel bicycle. I know nothing about vintage bikes but thought that at $7.50 it was a good buy, I've been needing a new bicylce anyway. I was wondering if someone could give me some more information on this bicyle or at least point me in a direction to find out more. I do know that it was made in the U.K. so I will also post a query on the vintage english bicyle thread. Once again, I would greatly appreciate any help that anbody could give. |
Please see earlier posting on this discussion list on 10/27/99 for a detailed description. I think the original asking price was much to high? Bike is now for sale at $ 300.00. |
I recently bought a bike that has a Firestone badge. The serial and model # is under the bottom bracket and on a metal tag. Model# 18039a106 and serial number 41741618 or A1741618 .I can't tell if it's 4 or A. I would appreciate any information. Thanks |
I found in my attic this Excelsior bike. It has 20 inch wooden rims and has a fixed gear drive system. It has pretty ornate qill sytle pedals. I beleve it's pre 1911 because Schwinn bought Excesior in 1911 but this one has no Schwinn name on the head badge or any where else. Does any body have any information about this bike or know were I might look to find out more about this bike? Thank You. |
My friend just bought a '71 lemonpeeler. He's concerned about the authenticity of it. It's in great shape except for a few chips in the paint. In those areas where the paint is chipped it appears to have some red paint underneath. According to the serial number on the head set in was built in Nov. of '71. How can he determine for sure if it was originally built as a lemonpeeler? Any help on this we would appreciate. Thanks. |

A friend of mine just purchased what looks to be an all original version of the Lil Chik (1976?) and I was hoping someone might be able to share some information about the bike. He is interested in its value (condition is descibed as "very good")as well as sources for parts and accesories (fenders and a handlebar basket). I would greatly appreciate any other information about this bike as well or good sources of information that I could search. Thanks in advance. Paul |

I have a question about two types of Schwinn head badges. They are both made in Chicago. They are both oval. One size, known as the classic, is longer than the more common oval size. I have a Black Phantom frame with a small oval badge. The reproduction Phantoms have the longer (classic size). I also have a spitfire with the longer (classic)size. Is there a relationship to the year or model of Schwinn that determines which one of the two badges it would receive? |
I am the original owner of a 1968 Schwinn Varsity 10 speed with straight handlebars, which is in excellent condition. However, I use it rarely because I live in a city and the bike is too heavy to carry in and out of the subway, etc. Do you think this bike have any serious value to it, or should it just be discarded. (BTW, I saw a virtually identical model on display in the Smithsonian in DC not long ago...) |

I have had no luck finding decals, either original, factory repros, NOS or others for what is a very common bike. Can someone PLEASE help? I need a complete set for fork, frame, top tube, seat tube and chainguard for a 1967 Schwinn Typhoon. The bike has been beautifully repainted and all parts cleaned, and polished. This was my brothers bike and before that it was my uncles bike. He got it new for his confirmation gift in 1967. I need these quickly so I can surprise him with this restoration in time to give it to him for X-mas. Even if you do not have these, please point me to a vendor who does. Thank you in advance for helping me complete this gift. |
About a week ago I posted a message that I had an original cotton picker that I found .I got it from the original owner. It has a split across the seat, a couple of small dents in the rear fender, quite a few scratches in the paint[one of the tubes has a large portion of paint scraped off]. The rear rim is pitted ,but none of the other chrome is. It polished up real nice. The tires are holding air,all mechanical parts are in good working order. I did some careful buffing and cleaning, and it turned out to look real nice and it rides great. I want to know if anyone will give me an honest idea of what it is worth. Irealize it's tough to do with out seeing it, but take a shot at it. The way it sits right now , it's already a head turner. I have photos if you are seriously interested, but I would rather keep it than give it away for less than it is worth.I am willing to sell it for a fair price. Thanks, from Joe in Michigan |
Hello Everyone! I am the proud owner of a Rollfast 26" boy's bike that I believe is designed like what is called a "cruiser". It has a black frame with white sprayed arrow designs on the front fork. This bike also was available in red. The front tire is a 26" x 1.75 U.S. Royal Chain 175 with chain link tread design. I wore out the back tire which was the same but I could not get a exact replacement at the time and had to settle for a Zephyr Flyte (spelling correct)First Line of the same size. these were white walls. It has a tank that is white with an in built horn. This tank also incorporates a chrome feature that looks like the hull of a racing boat straddling the bottom. This feature protuds forward to hold twin head lamps. this sort of looks like the front of a 1964 Mercury automobile. there are a pair of decals on the tank just behind the handlebar pinion which are designed in an elongated chrome oval the design colors are split in half horizontally with red on top and black on the bottom with three white stars in each half. The back of the frame features a package rack with tailfin chrome bumpers with a taillight. the chain-guard and the wheel mud-guards are all chrome. The original saddle is a Mesinger that is black with a white tip that elongates to the back. it also has a chrome bumper on the back as well. I later replaced this with a "Banana" seat for comfort reasons. I still have the original seat though. It was a Christmas present for me. that I charished and rode many a mile along the back roads of Cohoes and Waterford, near Albany, New York for many years. I now live and work overseas in Olde England,UK.and guess what the bike is in my garage here under wraps. I wouldn't part with it for all the crown jewells. I am curious as to what happened to the Rollfast company that use to be in New York City. Does anyone now if it still exists or was it closed down, or swallowed up by some conglomerate??? Regards Ed |
Recently acquired a "complete" WF X53, including 2spd bendix rear and proper functioning WF speedo, which will keep me busy this winter. "Cool, stylin' rider as is." Does any body have available, decent pictures for proper frame and fork paint/graphics or reference to known X53 experts for guidance? Not all necessary decals seem to be available from the regular sources. Any help, guidence and referrals will be appreciated. Thank you in advance. Glenn Phillips Portland, Oregon |

It's been over a year since I pulled this old balloon bicycle from a coal storage room in a basement of my friends house, and I am have yet to figure out its history. The head badge says ROAD KING, serial # C2451 is stamped on bottom bracket, 26 x 2.125 Fisk Air Flight tires, Troxel seat, and New Departure Model D rear hub are the only printed or stamped clues. I have taken a few pictures of this bicycle posted it on the web. Also on the same page I have pictures an Alco "Villager 3"(3 speed grip shift, 26x1.75)that I could use some background info on. Is Alco still in business? I searched the web...nothing. Anyway.. I'd appreciate any input about the bikes. CHECK EM OUT (if you get a picture of a corvette intake manifold, you've got the right page, just scroll down!) http://hometown.aol.com//harleynzen/vetteBike.html |
I just bought a colombia badged balloon style tank bike. Do these bikes come with alot of schwinn parts on them or is this bike a mutt? This bike has carlisle lightning dart tires, bendix rear 3 yellow strip hub,two tone tank,no fenders. The gooseneck and front hub and bottom crank cover has the schwinn markings. I own a Klunker 5 Limited ed. from the 70's too.I don't see anything on klunker5 anywhere either. |
I've seen some examples of middleweights customized with 3-piece cranks where there used to be a one-piece crank. (There's one or more in Bike Rod n Kustom). My middleweight has a 1 piece crank, so the bottom bracket shell is not threaded. Is there a way that a standard bottom bracket can fit in there? Sorry, this may be a Custom Discussion Group question, but to me its a middleweight question. Any help is appreciated. |
We've almost got our first cut at a file upload program completed. It'll enable you to post pictures to our picture database. We're hoping to have it up by this weekend. |
I just aquired a great find, but need help identifying the year and model. It is a Schwinn straightbar ballooner from somewhere between 30's and 40's. It is very similar to bike pictured on page 55 of "Schwinn Bicycles" book by Pridmore and Hurd. Head badge is missing, but the outline left on the frame looks like it may have been an Excelsior because of the symetrical bumps on the ends of the oval. Here is the serial number Z96757. Has nice drop center rims with New Departure front hub and Morrow rear coaster. Unusual right angle seatpost and rollbar forks like those in pic. Please help, I would love to restore this one. Keith's bike page with serial numbers do not ID before 1948. Thank you. |
we have this bicycle and would like to know it's age. The only numbers we could find was on the head badge 0859. |
I have an old high wheeler that has been in the family since at least 1910. All parts are intact except 4-5 spokes, the seat cover and the tires are in pieces. The bike has no dents or bent metal parts. I am starting at square one. How do I determine its make and age? Can anyone recommend any logical steps as I begin or consider beginning restoration? Thanks for any assistance. |
Could someone please help me out . I am trying to figure out who made the SCOUT BIKE. It's a mens 26" balloon tires no tank no fender lights and no holes on fenders for any lights. It's got the front truss,New Dep. hubs Badge reads SCOUT. I have been told it is from the 30's from two different bike shops and all original, but they do not know the manufacturer. Possibly Dayton or Colson. Someone please help |
I found a crazy bike shop that had 2 sets of all white tires size 26 X 2.125 for the Schwinn S-2 rim. I hear that these are aftermarket and that Schwinn never had all white tires on their bikes. These are new Taiwan made tires but they will look nice, I think. Didn't Lightning Dart make an all white tire for the Schwinn? Which black and whitewall tires are more desirable than others? I would like to buy a set of Schwinn tires (whitewalls) and a set of lightning Dart all white. |
I have a Raleigh Chopper Special Edition. This was the model with cast alloy mag wheels. It is all in silver and is in very good condition, about a 7 1/2. The bike was only built in 1976 to cellebrate 100,000 choppers being built, however this year was also the Queens Silver Jubilee, therefore some people refer to this model as the silver jubilee model. I live in the UK so shipping expenses should be taken into account, however over here this is a rare bike and it was never released in the US so it will be ultra rare over there. I have pictures: http://www.thetranmers.freeserve.co.uk/forsale.htm make me a reasonable offer and it's yours! |

I am interested in selling my Goodyear bike. I don't know much about the bike, so I could use some advice from anyone as to the value of it. The bike is in good condition and seems to be complete. It has fenders, tank, rear rack, seat, tires, chainguard, front light on the fender ( missing bulb and lens ), and all other std. bike parts intact. The bike has a metal head badge that says " Goodyear Hiway Patrol " and " Columbia Built " in the corner. The bike has very little rust on the chrome. The paint is all intact but quite faded. Any info on this bike would be much appreciated. I also have a Schwinn Corvette frame and chainguard for sale. |
My friend has a Yamaha Motobike that he wants to find correct parts for... Need to know: 1. What are correct wheels for this bike. 2. The bike has painted S7 rims 24X1.75, Black script grips, and an oval head badge with a light Blue back ground. It's in good over all shape wiht minor rust pits here and there. Everything is there from what I can tell. It's just missing some of the decal on the chaingaurd. I'm thinking of buying this from a coworker and want to be fair to him. Thanks for any help!! |

I bought a Schwinn tandem and I am having difficulties figuring out what model it is. The serial number is T01988 which should be 1955. It looks like a "built for two" model possibly but the rear section doesn't have the typical crossbar. It was originally candy apple blue. Any help would be appreciated. Also, where can I get original decals for it? You can see a picture of the bike here. http://marina.fortunecity.com/bowcreek/193/sale/tandem2.jpg Thanks! |

Didjaever find just the part you needed but the guy who has it won't let go even though he isn't going to use it? Sure you have. I'm restoring a 49 Dayton that has a Delta Rocket Ray light whose bottom half looks like a rusty sieve. I was at my favorite bike shop the other day and happened to see the very light way down in the bottom corner of a showcase. It was NOS in the box with instructions yet. The owner was on vacation and I had to wait a week to hit him up for it. No dice, it was a gift from a friend and he might need it some day. I can understand that. I have bikes, that people want that I won't sell even though I have many bikes and don't ride some of them ever. I have another source though. My nephew picked up an old Stelber bike in an alley where it was heading for the dump. It has the light I want. Now if I can just talk him out of it. He's not a bike guy so maybe I have a chance. |
Check the "Restoration Tips" section of this site for some great painting discussions. |

Have acquired a Schwinn Hornet Deluxe (we think). We need help finding out if it is original or whatever. Where would we find the Schwinn serial number? What other characteristics should this bike have to be original? |

i have a frame that is supposed to be a krate. the serial number is under the head badge and starts with MF and the original color appears to be gold. it had the krate front end on it but was taken off and sold before i got it. any clues???? |
i need some info on a girl's all chrome hawthorne. serial no. is H374000. the bike has a green tank that connects to the headlight with two enclosed light bulbs in it. it also has a horn in the tank and it is all intact.there is also green paint at the very last 3 inches on the bottom of the front forks. but the rest of the bike is completely chrome. i do not know what the tire size is because i have not received the rims and tires yet but judging by the fenders i would say it is a middleweight.it also has front trusses and a green carrier in back. i would give this bike a good 7 on the 1-10 scale.it has a little pitting on parts of the frame but for a chrome bike it is in excellent shape.i need to know what year and model this is and if anyone could give me a rough price estimate i would sure appreciate it. thanx. |
I have a Green girl's Schwinn Spitfire with 26" wheels that I am trying to find more information about. The serial number is B72051. I do not see the Spitfire included in the listing of manufacture dates for Schwinn. Am I right in assuming this is a 1954 bike? Any opinions on what it might be worth? It is not pristine, but decals and pinstripes on the wheels are intact. Thanks for any info. |
i had the first ad on your new page. it was there this morning now it's gone. just curious, bye! |
