BALLOON:   COCA-COLA posted by: Joe on 12/19/99 at 7:44:21 PM
What do you guys think of my restored Rollfast Coca-cola bike? You can see it on this site in the pic archives under Rollfast or 1949. Yes this was a REAL coke bike when found in the woods under a rotten tarp that seemed to save many of the factory parts. nearly a year later and lots of time and work its back to its self agen. Restoration was done useing mainly NOS parts and a VERY nice pair of repop rims but the sprocket, h-bars, tank, rack, seat post, and fork are all factory. Take a look at the pc and let me know what you think.

Thanks, Joe

or something-(the head tag is missing)All the other parts are schwinn though.
It does not have a fixed kickstand like the
other schwinns I have observed. Ok maybe having a whizzer engine
has something to do with it because being a motorbike it has
a drop stand. Was this something done only to dx's ,or could it
be just part of the motorbike package? Or is it some other bike?
These are some questions that have been destroying my mind. Help

MUSCLE BIKES:   Sting-Rays are too common posted by: PW on 11/19/99 at 5:14:39 AM
I saw this topic on the schwinn page and figured I'd bring
it up here, too.

Sting-Rays and Krates are like beanie babies.
There are lots of 'em around and the prices
are way too high for such common bikes.

There's a guy on the web who's been putting
up wanted ads for 16x20* bikes for a couple
years now. I'll bet he's got a nice collection
built up.

If you went to a bike show and there were 2 booths
next to each other, each booth with 5 16x20
muscle bikes, which booth would you go to?
The one with 5 krates, each a different color?
Or the booth with a Krate, a Chopper, a Screamer,
a.. (I can't think of 2 more 16x20s right now...)

* a 16x20 bike is a muscle bike with a 16" front wheel and
20" rear wheel, for example a Krate or Raleigh Chopper or
a Sears Screamer - check the picture database for examples

I have a question about two types of Schwinn head badges. They are both made in Chicago. They are both oval. One size, known as the classic, is longer than the more common oval size. I have a Black Phantom frame with a small oval badge. The reproduction Phantoms have the longer (classic size). I also have a spitfire with the longer (classic)size. I have had no luck finding decals, either original, factory repros, NOS or others for what is a very common bike. Can someone PLEASE help? I need a complete set for fork, frame, top tube, seat tube and chainguard for a 1967 Schwinn Typhoon. The bike has been beautifully repainted and all parts cleaned, and polished. This was my brothers bike and before that it was my uncles bike. He got it new for his confirmation gift in 1967. I need these quickly so I can surprise him with this restoration in time to give it to him for X-mas. Even if you do not have these, please point me to a vendor who does. Thank you in advance for helping me complete this gift.

MUSCLE BIKES:   Schwinn Cotton Picker posted by: Joe on 11/7/99 at 6:23:46 PM
About a week ago I posted a message that I had an original cotton picker that I found .I got it from the original owner. It has a split across the seat, a couple of small dents in the rear fender, quite a few scratches in the paint[one of the tubes has a large portion of paint scraped off]. The rear rim is pitted ,but none of the other chrome is. It polished up real nice. The tires are holding air,all mechanical parts are in good working order. I did some careful buffing and cleaning, and it turned out to look real nice and it rides great. I want to know if anyone will give me an honest idea of what it is worth. Irealize it's tough to do with out seeing it, but take a shot at it. The way it sits right now , it's already a head turner. I have photos if you are seriously interested, but I would rather keep it than give it away for less than it is worth.I am willing to sell it for a fair price. Thanks, from Joe in Michigan

MIDDLEWEIGHT:   1964 Rollfast 26" posted by: Edward L~Ecuyer on 11/6/99 at 1:33:14 PM
Hello Everyone!
I am the proud owner of a Rollfast 26" boy's bike that I believe is designed like what is called a "cruiser".
It has a black frame with white sprayed arrow designs on the front fork. This bike also was available in red. The front tire is a 26" x 1.75 U.S. Royal Chain 175 with chain link tread design. I wore out the back tire which was the same but I could not get a exact replacement at the time and had to settle for a Zephyr Flyte (spelling correct)First Line of the same size. these were white walls. It has a tank that is white with an in built horn. This tank also incorporates a chrome feature that looks like the hull of a racing boat straddling the bottom. This feature protuds forward to hold twin head lamps. this sort of looks like the front of a 1964 Mercury automobile. there are a pair of decals on the tank just behind the handlebar pinion which are designed in an elongated chrome oval the design colors are split in half horizontally with red on top and black on the bottom with three white stars in each half. The back of the frame features a package rack with tailfin chrome bumpers with a taillight. the chain-guard and the wheel mud-guards are all chrome. The original saddle is a Mesinger that is black with a white tip that elongates to the back. it also has a chrome bumper on the back as well. I later replaced this with a "Banana" seat for comfort reasons. I still have the original seat though.
It was a Christmas present for me. that I charished and rode many a mile along the back roads of Cohoes and Waterford, near Albany, New York for many years. I now live and work overseas in Olde England,UK.and guess what the bike is in my garage here under wraps. I wouldn't part with it for all the crown jewells.
I am curious as to what happened to the Rollfast company that use to be in New York City. Does anyone now if it still exists or was it closed down, or swallowed up by some conglomerate???
Regards
Ed

It's been over a year since I pulled this old balloon bicycle from a coal storage room in a basement of my friends house, and I am have yet to figure out its history. The head badge says ROAD KING, serial # C2451 is stamped on bottom bracket, 26 x 2.125 Fisk Air Flight tires, Troxel seat, and New Departure Model D rear hub are the only printed or stamped clues.
I have taken a few pictures of this bicycle posted it on the web.

Also on the same page I have pictures an Alco "Villager 3"(3 speed grip shift, 26x1.75)that I could use some background info on. Is Alco still in business? I searched the web...nothing.

Anyway.. I'd appreciate any input about the bikes.

I've seen some examples of middleweights customized with 3-piece cranks where there used to be a one-piece crank. (There's one or more in Bike Rod n Kustom).

My middleweight has a 1 piece crank, so the bottom bracket shell is not threaded. Is there a way that a standard bottom bracket can fit in there?

Sorry, this may be a Custom Discussion Group question, but to me its a middleweight question. Any help is appreciated.

I just aquired a great find, but need help identifying the year and model. It is a Schwinn straightbar ballooner from somewhere between 30's and 40's. It is very similar to bike pictured on page 55 of "Schwinn Bicycles" book by Pridmore and Hurd. Head badge is missing, but the outline left on the frame looks like it may have been an Excelsior because of the symetrical bumps on the ends of the oval. Here is the serial number Z96757. Has nice drop center rims with New Departure front hub and Morrow rear coaster. Unusual right angle seatpost and rollbar forks like those in pic. Please help, I would love to restore this one. Keith's bike page with serial numbers do not ID before 1948. Thank you.

The bike was only built in 1976 to cellebrate 100,000 choppers being built, however this year was also the Queens Silver Jubilee, therefore some people refer to this model as the silver jubilee model. I live in the UK so shipping expenses should be taken into account, however over here this is a rare bike and it was never released in the US so it will be ultra rare over there. Didjaever find just the part you needed but the guy who has it won't let go even though he isn't going to use it? Sure you have. I'm restoring a 49 Dayton that has a Delta Rocket Ray light whose bottom half looks like a rusty sieve.
I was at my favorite bike shop the other day and happened to see the very light way down in the bottom corner of a showcase. It was NOS in the box with instructions yet. The owner was on vacation and I had to wait a week to hit him up for it. No dice, it was a gift from a friend and he might need it some day. I can understand that. I have bikes, that people want that I won't sell even though I have many bikes and don't ride some of them ever. I have another source though. My nephew picked up an old Stelber bike in an alley where it was heading for the dump. It has the light I want. Now if I can just talk him out of it. He's not a bike guy so maybe I have a chance.

MUSCLE BIKES:   Raleigh Chopper posted by: JC on 10/19/99 at 5:47:05 AM
Looking for information on Raleigh Choppers:

1) What years were they made?
2) Is it true they came as 10 speeds?
3) Was there a girl's version?

Thanks in advance for any help. I'll have more questions...

We've got retail space and great storage space now, so we're
starting to build up inventory again.

The $199.95 lowriders (with great standard equipment) are
up on RetroSpokes.com. What other lowrider parts do you
want us to carry?

Our inventory will be displayed on RetroSpokes.com
(see ad above) and can be purchased over the web through
them, or in person at Cambridge Bicycle in Cambridge, Mass.
(see ad above).

As we build up our inventory and get e-commerce running
on RetroSpokes.com, let us know what useful bits and pieces
you'd like us to stock.

Thanks,
Vin - Menotomy Vintage Bicycles at OldRoads.com

ive got what i beleive is a huffy 24" musclebike complete with banana
seat.i got it from the original owner and he thinks they got it back in 1972 or 1973.
it's yellow with a black banana seat with a yellow stripe down the seat. the chain guard and head badge say holiday.
this is a real nice adult size muscle bike and any history info and or value info
would be appreciated.

AGE / VALUE:   chrome hawthorne posted by: john on 10/14/99 at 9:30:15 AM
i need some info on a girl's all chrome hawthorne. serial no. is
H374000. the bike has a green tank that connects to the headlight with two enclosed light bulbs in it.
it also has a horn in the tank and it is all intact.there is also green paint at the very last 3 inches on the bottom of the front forks.
but the rest of the bike is completely chrome. i do not know what the tire size is because i have not received the rims and tires yet but judging
by the fenders i would say it is a middleweight.it also has front trusses and a green carrier in back.
i would give this bike a good 7 on the 1-10 scale.it has a little pitting on parts of the frame
but for a chrome bike it is in excellent shape.i need to know what year and model this is and if anyone could give me a rough price estimate i would
sure appreciate it. thanx.

I have a Green girl's Schwinn Spitfire with 26" wheels that I am trying to find more information about. The serial number is
B72051. I do not see the Spitfire included in the listing of manufacture dates for Schwinn. Am I right in assuming this is a 1954
bike? Any opinions on what it might be worth? It is not pristine, but decals and pinstripes on the wheels are intact. Thanks for
any info.
