Question: how much do these bikes weigh?Baloon tire bikes? Are middle weights different?
Message:
It's just a matter of tire size, mainly. Balloon tire bikes have 2.125" tires and middleweight bkes have 1.75" or 1-3/4" tires. Middleweights are a more recent development (mid 50's) and tend not to have big horntanks and other motorcycle type equipment.

Message:
You can buy parts for your Black Phantom from Memory Lane Classics and other restoration shops. A properly restored Black Phantom should be worth $2000-3000, but it will probably take you close to $2000 to do a proper restoration including paint.

About the Oeglaend Perfekt Bicycle.
Perfekt was one of several brands manufactured by the company "Jonas
Oeglaend A/S" in Sandnes, Norway. Other brands were "D.B.S." ("Den Beste
Sykkel" which translates as "The Best Bicycle"), "Elite", "Fram",
"Kamerat", "Spesial", "Tempo", "Viking", "Junior", "Donald Duck", and
"Ole Brumm" ("Winnie the Pooh"). The last three were kids' bikes.
I have done a lot of research on bicycle manufacture in Norway, and so
far has registered more than 5oo different brands. Most of thes were
based on frames from "Jonas Oeglaend A/S".
The company was founded in 1868 as a trading company. In the early
1890's they started importing german bicycles. In 1898 "Arnold, Schwinn,
& Co." in Chicago granted them the distribution rights in Norway for
"The World" bicycles. These bicycles were sold well into the 1930's. In
1933 their most popular brand was copyrighted: "D.B.S.". This brand
survives to this day. For all you muscle bikes afficinados out there, I
can inform you that the company also manufactured the fabulous
"Crossmaster", "Apache", and "Tomahawk" types in the 60's and 70's. All
legendary muscle bikes with a big cult following today. In fact
re-designed (and uglier) "Apaches" and "Tomahawks" were re-introduced
this year to a less than over-awed public. You just cannot repeat a
success THAT easily.
"Perfekt" was a cheaper type and survived into the late 60's. I have a
complete list of production figures based on frame numbers and can
determine the exact year of manufacture, if you give me the frame
number. It would be very interesting to read more about how and where
you got hold of it. There can't be THAT many old norwegian built
bicycles in the U.S.

Thanks for taking the time to enter that.
I once had a D.B.S. and couldn't find anything about it.

Looking for any info on a Libertas bicycle. Mine has the name Depsy etched on the chainguard. It has wooden fenders and wheels and I think it may have been manufactured in the WW2 era, as the frame, etc., looks too modern to have been made in the 1910's-20's.
Message:
I need some advice in choosing between two reproduction bikes. Whichever I choose will see fairly regular use as a light delivery carrier. (10-20 letters a week in our downtown area.)
Both bikes are 26" Balloners with Tanks (But no horn in the tanks.) and racks.
The First is a Western Flyer, Red + White. Pros - $250. cost, headlight, full chain cover.
Con - STREAMERS! (Yuck!), painted fenders.
2nd - Schwinn Cruiser Deluxe, Maroon +
Black (Strange colors but not a turn off.) Pros - springer, chrome fenders
Cons - $350. cost
The Cost seems to be the tough factor. I know the Schwinn normally retails for @ $450., but the $250 for the WF is really attractive. Which is likely to retain most of its value in the future?
Message:
The WF is a great deal. And if you really need a springer pick up
a Taiwan one for around $40. You'll be way ahead. As for future value, the Schwinn isn't US made anymore
and the WF name is already more 'rare'.
Message:
...while nothing is a `done deal' yet, the wife picked the Schwinn.
Actually, the owner of the Schwinn is talking a possible trade for my old '61 Sears middleweight.
Message:
My '52 Panther has several oddities. First, the Delta Rocket
4Ray is all chrome, while all of the other Schwinns
I've seen with 'Rays have them painted to match the bike.
Is it possible someone removed the paint, or did some lights come this way from the factory? Lastly, the Bendix brake on this bike, which has the brake arm with the red lettering, has a dull
gray finish, both on the hub shell and the brake arm itself. Did any Bendix hubs come this way from the factory? I doubt the hub was repainted. Thanks in advance. Craig
Message:
I've seen a lot of dull-finish Bendix hubs
and brake arms, so that sounds right. But I dunno about the
chromed light. I've seen painted only. Haven't even seen them as
accessories in chrome.
Message:
I have come across both finishes when looking at Delta Rocket Ray lights. I have seen them painted and then I have seen them chromed. The chrome models usually came with a painted housing with the chrome showing through the rim that goes around the entire body of the light. The nose piece is always chrome but the chrome body seems to appear on the more deluxe bicycles like a 50s balloon Panther. My guess is that the full chrome body is one of these deluxe lights with the paint removed. Next the hubs, rims and handlebars. I also have encountered dull finish on these components. I know it is not chrome and also know it was not rusted or abused. I currently have a girls Schwinn World from either the late 40s or early 50s that has this type of finish on all bare metal parts. This may have been a result of the WWII needs for precious metals. Hope this helps.

They are both cheaply made versions of the Columbie 5 star replica. I believe the WF is a better investment, but any of the schwinns are probably better riders.

Message:
It's hard to enjoy a bike in the box. Recent prices I've seen are $5000 & $3000. However, someone was offering to deliver one to your door for $2600 and I think I saw another for $2200. One is up for auction at www.ebay.com and the current price is $1575. No spare parts are available so if you ride it you may wish to swap tires. I'd say, at least assemble it so you can appreciate it but it would be worth more in the box. The question is when.

Trying to find make and ago of old ballon tire bike - quessing back in the '30s or '40' - has serial number on bottom of frame under crank of M237470 - no other identity or markings. Has two bars from front to seat - bottom one is straight and top one is straight except for 8 or 10 inches back by seat. Bar from front down to crank is also straight. Post for saddle is 5/8" diameter. Has New Departure brake. Would like to restore if I can identify. Picture available by lst class mail. If you can help - would appreciate reply with your address. Will send picture at that time. Thanks! Dave

Message:
I guess they would be the skirt guards?
I originally had a motorcycle type
kickstand. Correction on the date -
1936-1939 would that be about the year
it was made? (sn E66121) I gather is it
a pretty common bike. I'm wondering how
far I should go in restoring it.
Message:
Yes, it is worth restoring. They are not that common, and
it is from the 'sweet spot' of the ballooner era. Now when was the last time
you saw a bike with a skirt guard? ........... If the paint is half way decent,
you should restore the paint (not repaint it!). Read the "Paint" and "Rust" topics on this site.
Message:
We've added a new discussion topic devoted just
to the new reproduction bicycles (Columbia dashboard, Harley-Davidson, new Phantom, etc).

I want to build up my prewar Hawthorne. It has been very neglected and needs everything. I
am looking for parts that would compliment this era- do not have to
be original for this bike. It had curved
drop center rims, Cleveland Welding
style handlebars. I would like to buy
fenders, rack, drop kickstand, seat,
seatpost, pedals. I like the looks of
the prewar "red" tires and pedals.
Can anyone offer any parts or advice for building this thing? It has
a front fork that looks like recent year
Huffy- is it possible that this bike came with such a fork? I may want
to switch to a springer.... Thanks!
Message:
I don't have any parts, but might be able to
give information on the fork. When you say it looks like
a Huffy fork, do you mean the top of the forks are
held together by 3 horizontal plates? If that is what
you mean, then you DO have the correct fork. As for restoration
ideas, yeah red tires and pedals would look cool. Also some
kind of flared fenders. Have fun.

26X2.125 black walls. Were these
tires made about the same time?
the bike is a 1939-40.
Message:
Hey, I can't think of any bad words for Schwinn except for the current regime but thats another story.
Keep fixing those bikes & good luck.
Message:
I've got nothing bad to say about Schwinns either. I just sorta missed comming home and seeing something new. I often don't have much to say or ask but I do feel like I'm learning something. For the sake of something to say... I've got a Shelby Flyer frame in the pile, I recallreading references to other Shelby's but not this model. Are all Shelby's built by the same company (probably a silly question). when did the Shelby Cycling Company stop making bicycles?

Cornell Clippers sound right for your Elgin.
Message:
I think you are right. Even putting 2 new brands
together, I can see a difference in size. The Kenda 26 x 2.125
is definately bigger than the Cheng san 26 x 2.125. But they both fit
rims correctly.
Message:
I've got a nice, original condition
Shelby Western Flyer, apparently
manufactured by Shelby for the Western Auto Stores chain
in 1937. Problem, I need a part for the
rear hub (coaster brake),
a cone I think.
It's a rare hub, and not a new departure.
On the coaster brake lever, there is a patent number,
and it says "the Musselman hub brake co"
and under that, "western flyer"
I need the cone (?) part with the fine teeth, or perhaps
a parts hub, or working one.
I am waiting to find this item first
before I begin any restoration, and would appreciate any feedback. Thanks!
Message:
Cornell Clippers are NOT original tires for Elgins. Allstates were. Cornell Clippers were sold by Pep Boys Stores and had absolutely nothing to do with Sears bicycles. These are merely tires which someone replaced. If anything, any balloon tire would be just as appropriate as Cornells...but certainly they were not original equipment on Elgins.
Message:
"Airman Special" means nothing in itself and does not reveal either the year, the appearance of the bicycle, or the manufacturer. Although Speigels did sell a line of bicycles known as "Airman", others used the name as well. Also, Monark (not Monarch- which was a different company than Monark) only made SOME Airman bicycles. Shelby made some...Huffman made some...Cleveland Welding made some...etc...etc. THe only way to properly identify this bicycle is with a photograph.

I've got a Shelby Flyer. They were made by Shelby bicycles in Shelby Ohio.
They also made bikes under different badges. The rarest & most desired Shelby is the Airflow.
Message:
The term "airflow" or (more correctly) Airflo does NOT refer to only one Shelby nor any particular Shelby model or year. This term was used by Shelby to describe their streamlined frame design and NOT a particular model. The term "Airflo" was STILL in use on Shelby bicycles into the 1950s. It has become a collector's misnomer to refer to the 1938-40 deluxe Shelbys as "Airflow"...this is incorrect since this term actually only applied as a model to the 1939 deluxe Western Flyer version which was correctly called, Western Flyer Super Airflow". As for the Shelby models, they are correctly identified as SPEEDLINE AIRFLOs and not Airflow or Airflo. And...there were numerous different models of even the Speedline Airflo series- of which the fluted fender model, with horn and WITH electric tail light is the most rare and desirable. Furthermore, it is debatable which is the "most rare and desirable Shelby" since some might pass up the more common Speedlines for a fully equipped Shelby Lindy (again, of which there were several models)... and which is about as rare and desirable as Shelbys get!
Message:
Yes, we do know about Monarchs...we also know about MONARKS, which is the manufacturer if the question is about the Super Deluxe. There were TWO different companies...MONARCH...and MONARK. These two are, after all these years, still being confused with one another. Neither had any connection with the other.

Message:
The Hiawatha is made by Shelby. Back then bike mfgs put other company badges on their bikes. I believe it was made about 1943. I have one also. Its red/blue frame, white pinstripe, blue ND rims/hubs, truss forks, double curve bar.
Message:
Folks need to look back at Menotomy's archived discussions. We have explained this fully on a couple of occasions and the story of Hiawatha continues to get twisted again and again... Again, Shelby did NOT make ALL Hiawathas, nor did Cleveland Welding or any of the the other companies that made Hiawathas. There was no single company tha made Hiawatha bicycles. Furthermore, a single serial number with no visual (photo) is absolutely meaningless and cannot possibly reveal usable information about either Shelby or Hiawatha. There were no production Shelbys OR Hiawathas being made in 1943...they were making other things for World War 2, which was what most bicycle companies were doing in 1943. Also, the name, "Hiawatha" is NOT merely an alternate name of the Shelby Bicycle Company, but is in fact a product line specifically made for a retail store chain. There is valuable information listed in the Menotomy archived discussions and it might be a good idea to go back and inspect some of those old issues they have archived.
Message:
Thanks Leon, your knowledge is appreciated. I stand corrected. I do know that my "Gambles Hiawatha' is a Shelby. I have seen a Shelby that was exactly the same and have an ad of the exact bike. Like you said, w/o a pix its hard to specifically identify. Thanks.
Message:
Thanks right back and with all due respect to Dave, The notion that Shelby is Hiawatha and Hiawatha is Shelby or that the bicycles were EXACTLY the same is still a mistaken assumption. Many collectors look at ads or photos of Shelbys and see what looks like the same frame or frame and fenders, then conclude that their Hiawatha is EXACTLY the same bicycle. Think of these bicycles perhaps as you might of a Schwinn-Built Ranger and a Schwinn...or Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable...only MORE separated. Usually SOMETHING on the Hiawatha was different...a headlight, a tank, a paint job, a reverse of color schemes, a pinstripe, pedals, a different crank, a different sprocket, a different kickstand, even different tires- and of course the two were sold from different retailers. Automotive journalists coined a term for this phenomenon in cars: they call it "badge engineering"...and the term is perhaps even more appropriate for classic bicycles. However, unlike mere Shelby alternate names like "Flying Cloud" or "Traveler", Hiawatha was a distinct brand name and Shelby's only involvement with it was to build CERTAIN models for certain years under contract. Thus, we cannot in any way accurately say that a Hiawatha is a Shelby, we can only say (as Shelby did) that SOME Hiawathas were "SMB" (Shelby-Made Bicycles)...just as some Mead Rangers were Schwinn-Built bicycles, but certainly NOT Schwinns.

Message:
Ray's question about the relationship of Silver King and Hawthorne and whther they had a similar situation to Shelby and Hiawatha is ture. Except in the case of Monark-Silver King Company, they made ALL of the Ward's Duralium bicycles. Collectors, even top experst and auction houses and books regularly confuse and mix rthe two. The American Bicycle book clearly shows a Ward's Hawthorne Duralium bicycle WITH a Ward's Hawthorne name badege clearly on the bicycle, yet, the book labelled it as merely a Monark Silver King. To make matters worse, the museum which once featured it, did likewise. Then the auction house that auctioned it repeated the error and refused to correct it based on the previous erroneous information which had been distributed. Apparently thge name plate and minor differences from an actual Silver King meant nothing. Look at this bicycle and you will notice the different truss rods that go straigh up, rather than bending rearward as a Silver King would do. Also, notice the nameplate which is black and clearly is a Hawthorne plate, not a Silver King. Of course, most Duralium models also had different tires (Ward's brands) than were used on SIlver Kings. So thus, Silver Kings were Silver Kings, Hawthorne Duraliums were Hawthornes...and never the twain shall meet. The two almost always had SOME specific dirrences and were never truly identical. Monark also built a FEW other Hawthornes, but again these were all different and are properly known as Hawthornes, no matter who made them.

I ran across a boy's 26" ballooner today. Since I don't usually buy bike this old, I'm stumped as to
its worth. I remember the following: Red and creme paint, painted/striped wheels, tank w/horn
button and leaking battery, not a springer front end-rather a chrome truss, torpedo-style headlite on
fender, chainguard with the circular logo @ approx the 2 o'clock location, skiptooth/heart-style
chainwheel, "Type D" rear sprocket/brake, black rubber grips w/ball ends, Phantom-style rear
rack, the 2" round headbadge has a top hat surrounded by a circle and the words "Schwinn All
American". This bike is complete, but has some surface rust on the rack and on the seat tube where
a padlock must have rubbed for years. It also needs pedals. It rides fine. The seller "thinks" $200.
I'm thinking maybe a pre-way DX????? Any ideas on value/price. Like I said earlier, I mostly
collect bikes from the 60's, but would like a nice ballooner, especially if the price is right. Email me
at bell@msue.msu.edu Thanks a bunch!!

frame, not the rear axle, the chainguard bolts on (not clamped). The
serial is under the cranks and is H57302. It is a nice original bike. I

Could someone help me to identify this headlight ? It is for front fender mounting, it is off-white, rocket shaped ( one fin on top & one on each side ) , it has a "clam shell" type design that opens hinged on the front, the lens has a hooded appearance where the top cover overhangs it, The word "DARWIN" stamped across the top near the front. The switch for the light is on the bottom at the rear and looks like a tail hook from a fighter plane ( sort of ). Has any one seen one like this before ? Is it rare or valuable ? Any help would be most appreciated !

Gee, I bought a 1946 Hartford from Menotomy
which I actually ride. It is amazing to me
that a 52 year old bike is such a plush ride.
It has a new Persons seat, but there are
no rattles or creaks. And the headlight
on the fender just needed batteries. I would
love to hear more "discussion" about how
these bikes are just fabulous to ride.
As someone who bought this to replace a
stolen MTB, I must thank the thief. He/she
opened up a whole new biking experience.
No clicking of freewheels and because of
the laws of physics (momentum), it is sur-
prisingly easy to pedal.
Bikes are like Art--buy them for love and
your reward will be far more than the
dollar value!

Claudia, I too enjoy riding the older bicycles. My most enjoyable part of the hobby is to collect as many different types of bicycles that I can in order to ride them at least once. I buy some fixer uppers, restore them, ride them them sell them to get another one that I have not yet ridden. I have had many bikes, some are real dogs to ride while others are like you state a pleasure. It might be interesting if other readers/riders give there review of classic or antique bikes they have ridden. Here is my contribution, I have a girls 1950's vintage J.C. Higgins Colorflow bike that really looks cool. I am sad to say it rides awful. It seems its turning is off balance and I do not feel steady at all on it. Perhaps because it is a girls bike and I am a 6'3" tall guy, the geometry may not be suited for me. On the other hand I have a 1955 Schwinn Deluxe Hornet that rides like a dream and I could ride it for hours. Hope to hear more reviews.

Thought you guys might be amused by this. I have a '61 Mark IV Jaguar that I bought new. I was so proud of it that I bought an old Schwinn-Henderson Phantom used to ride on my paper route to save the Jaguar. I've entered both in the Art Car parade, which has a class for vehicles over 30 yrs old. Did this mainly to get cheap tickets to the Art Car BAll, which is one of the cooler parties in Houston. Jaguar is in VG condition, but Phantom is rusty and needs an original front fender, paint, etc, so started looking on the web for Phantom parts (with little hope) and found you guys and what appears to be the possibility of a wonderful new hobby. Hell, there's even a site on the rod brake Raleigh I bought new as a daily rider in 1980, and which has now become something of a rarity itself. Anyhow, it's great to know that there are actually others like me out there (Not that I'm a bike expert - I just love old bikes) so I thought I'd say Hi. Apologies for the bandwidth or if I posted in the wrong spot...

The camera quit recording about noon and nobody saw my bike get hauled off. My only hope is whoever took it is dumb enough to leave the easily identifiable tank unpainted. (Not to mention my powder coat.) Anybody else ever have this happen to them?

I have a Monark "Daisy Daisy" tandem. I am not certain of the age but suspect that it is early to mid 1960's because of the Bendix RB-2 rear hub. Mine has middlweight tires 26" x 1.75". The front part is a cantilever frame and the rear is a step through frame. (I saw a similar one for sale at www.winonaweb.com/antiquebikes/Bikes/s113.html for $500) Mine is red with white pinstriping and a big long red chainguard that has "Daisy Daisy" and some eighth notes on the back of it. Does this sound anything like yours?
I paid $125 for mine. It was straight but the paint was very faded. I am having it professionally painted as we "speak" (am paying way more for the paint than the bike will be worth when complete, but it will look cool).
Hope that helps.

Picked up a frame a couple weeks ago and I know bicycles, let alone frames, are next to imposible to identify without pictures but I tought someone might like to speculate. It appears to be a Schwinn 60's era cantalever frame knock off. The rear dropouts are very much Schwinn like as is the kickstand (chromed). All the welds are butt welded (not great welds) excepts the dropouts which apear to be swedged and welded. Another difference from the Schwinn is the location of the aft chainguard mount. It is about 1.5" long and welded to the seat stay rather than the chain stay. The head badge is gone but apears to have been rivited. Mounting holes are about where you'd expect a Schwinn badge to be. Again It looks like a Schwinn knock off maybe ten or twenty years old. Any thoughts as to what it might be? I'm goona through some spare wheels on it and ride it around so it doesn't really matter. Thanks.

I purchased a women's Roadmaster bike last weekend. I am wondering about the age of the bike. Under the bottom bracket, there are two
rows of numbers the top row is C12 the bottom row is D78826 52C (the last "C" has a small "W" inside of it. The head badge is red,
white, and black sort of checkered with a brass background. It says Road Master (Road above Master). The seat tube has a decal that
says "Master Weld Fame" across the top, has a graphic of a man holding a frame in the middle, and says "the Cleveland Welding Co." on
the bottom. The bike has a skip tooth chain. The rims are painted to match the bike. The rear hub is painted a silver/grey and has "Bendix
Elmira, NY 36-13" stamped on the shell. The rear dropouts are pre-war like. They are slotted to the rear and have adjustment screws. Any
help would be appreciated. Thanks, Karl Gerken

The kickstand, dropouts and headbadge holes

Skip-tooth would make me think it is a pre-war (before World War II)
bike, but I think Cleveland Welding bikes were one of the few manufacturers
to continue using skip-tooth after the war. At the 'newest', I'd say 1948.
At the oldest, I'd say 1935.

While looking for old British road bikes at a used stuff store, I found an old blue Colson ballon tire bike, with "Colson Elyria Ohio" headbadge and "faded but looks original" light blue paint. It looks similar to the Colson at http://boulder.earthnet.net/~keithm/Colson.htm, but the rear stays are made of a single curved piece of tubing.
I don't have a need for this bike, and already have too many projects. But this thing will be in the dumpster if it doesn't sell soon. Should this bike be saved?
Thanks
Message:
Holy sh!t. Don't dump it! Even the most
average Colson in poor shape is worth
good money. And if it has the internal front suspension
(inside the head tube), it is worth $400- $500 even if it is
rusted.
Message:
Thanks, Kath. Before I saw your reply, I revisted the bike at the junk shop, and looked at details a little harder.
It has the same general appearance as the Colson on the website I cited earlier, but not as elegant. The chainguard, for instance, only has one stamped in ridge, not several, and the sprocket does't have the swoopy design. The headbadge is a big circle, with the initial "C" of Colson taking up the left hand side of the perimeter of the badge, which is cream with red letters, in fair condition. I did not know to look for a front suspension, on the otherhand did not see anything else unusual so it probably does not have it.
Of course, the sly owner of the junk shop knows I am interested since I stopped by twice. Although he has a rack full of abused Murrays and the like, now "he's been thinking about fixing it up for his wife". Sure - he is just positioning himself for the bargaining to come. He won't quote a price, but wants an offer. If a Colson in poor condition is worth "good money", what are we talking about? $50? $100?
My wife will kill me if I bring another dumpy looking treasure home, so I cannot keep this bike. I'm willing to buy the bike and pass it on to someone who would appreciate it. But when you consider finding a buyer, shipping, etc, I know it will be a hassle and I don't want to loose money on this. Could you give me a little more specific price guidance?
Thanks,
Tom F.

Can anyone tell me the approximate value of my '57 Jaguar Mark II? Right now it's a fun rider, but I'm not up for a total restoration. Most stuff is original or correct, and I have decals for it, but it's rusty and some of the chrome is pitted to the point of needing to be redone. I could sell it to a friend for cheap and get to visit it on occasion, or sell it to the restorer I don't know who would make it beautiful, but put it on a shelf. Any thoughts, on price or who would be a more deserving guardian.

The guy in the junk shop is convinced the Colson is a $700 bike. What a starting point for negotiations! No front suspension, but I did notice that the cutouts on the sprocket are in a heart shape, very cute.
The number on the bottom bracket appears to be "11 1976" , although the "11" is hard to read, and may be just two vertical lines, sort of like a foundry mark, though they are stamped in on the same line as the "1976".
I presume this is not a build date. (It looks '50s or '40s to my uneducated eye.) Would someone please help me get an idea of the year, or anything else relevant from these numbers?
Thanks,
Tom F.
