MAPPING IT OUT:

Vin V***'s map collection includes hundreds of Massachusetts maps that date back as far as the 1830s; some name every walkway, building and property owner in a town. Customers who order reprints through V***'s mail-order business tend to be interested in the maps for genealogical research, historical information, or treasure-hunting clues. Treasure hunters use the maps to find former campgrounds, ancient cellar holes, and dump sites of yore, where a casual dig might unearth valuable artifacts. more...

CHART HOUSE:

The oldest map in existence, sketched on a clay tablet made in ancient Babylonia circa 2,500 B.C., suggests the outline of a settlement in a mountain-lined river valley.
While maps detailing New England are a little more recent, some of them loom with age-old mystery. Vin V****, owner of Menotomy Maps in Arlington, says he has the only map ever made detailing what is known as "Wreck Cove" along Monomoy Point in Chatham.
Menotomy Maps provides high-quality reprints (on acid-free paper measuring 30 by 24 inches) of antique maps detailing shipwrecks along the Cape, a silver mine in the Middlesex Fells reservation near Medford, and gold claims in the Black Hills of South Dakota. He can also produce a map revealing the owner of your New England home up to 120 years ago. more...

LOST WAYS:

Those who have used Forest Service maps for several years know that the older versions are generally the preferred ones. They give more details and show trails that have since been closed. We're not saying that you should venture on to closed trails, but when they are shown on the map, they help you pinpoint your location. Well imagine how much better and more fun maps from the 1800s might be.
Menotomy Maps [address] offers reprints of just such maps. Maps from several time periods and of varying detail are available. [pricing info] Many of the maps show detail right down to the location of old bars, abandoned railroad crossings and even old ruins. These old landmarks also aid cross-country navigation for hikers and four-wheelers alike and can be an explorer's dream. more...
